These rouge filled polishing cloths are not really something that most watchmakers (the one's I know anyway) would even bother using or having. If you are going to polish something, there's proper equipment for doing so, and a cloth that takes much longer and does a poorer job isn't really useful to most watchmakers.
I suspect it was from being in the ultrasonic tank, rather than any polishing cloth. If the gasket had turned to goop that can be very difficult to remove (I find 99% alcohol works best) so given that the other watches weren't polished, this makes the most sense.
