Do Omegas hold their value?

Bought heaps of watches over the years. Some have gone up, some have gone down.

But if you only mention the watches that went up in value, then you did well. Isn't that how everyone does it? 👍

Invest in the components used to make tanks, armored vehicles, military helicopters, and anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons. It seems as though the Ukrainians are busy blowing up the former using the latter so all that stuff is going to be in demand. ::facepalm1::

Long time lurker (I used this page a lot to find info on fixing my Albatross!), first time poster:

Like many other people, I'm trying to move my savings out of cash and into other commodities which won't lose their value. Obviously watches seem to be a safe bet. Does this plan make any sense, or am I kidding myself:

I have a savings pot which I hope one day will buy me a decent Moonwatch. But the way things are going, I'm worried the prices will rise and the value of my savings will devalue quicker than I can save. So I'm thinking of putting my money into a watch now to hold some of that value, and as I save more keep upgrading until I get the watch I really want. (Who knows, maybe along the way I'll find a cheaper version I'll be happy to stick with!)

There are a lot of Japan-based Speedmasters on e-Bay, eg:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284697730630#shpCntId

For around 1500GBP I can get my foot on the ladder, plus around 300GBP VAT and duty - so 1800GBP.

So the question is, does that seem to be a good way to store the value of my savings - in say a year, will that watch have held it's value, or lost or gained value?

I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this one!
Put your money into index funds if you want to invest. Watches suck as investments, despite what we tell our significant others.

I don't buy Omega's because they are an investment although I find them quite liquid assets, particularly the low to mid priced ones. I learnt early on three things:

1. If you buy from a dealer you quite often can pay twice the price that the same watch will sell for on an auction (or sometimes even more). I have myself bought from dealers but only when I am certain it is something I want for a long time and it's particularly hard to find and it's particularly good condition and I don't think I'll want to sell it anytime soon. This is simply because achieving the price you paid a dealer will be incredibly difficult and unlikely.
2. Secondly as briefly mentioned above "condition, condition, condition" - if it is good condition it will sell more easily and thus be more liquid as it were
3. Thirdly, I only buy watches I love - that way if they go up or down in value, it really doesn't matter too much as you benefit from the enjoyment of its ownership.

Overall I am up on my watch purchases, but this is based on over 40 sales over the years - many have been losses. As with any investment you require a knowledge for what you are working with, so you can understand value, but the main issue with watches is that fashions change! Gold will always have value, but if fashions change, the watch markets will reflect the tastes of the majority. If demand drops, prices will drop.

I think the demand can't go much lower but the supply can go a lot higher, that's the main problem I see with the market, we're experiencing times where people die a lot faster and their watches hit the market higher than demand

If you're really passionate about collecting it's a win-win, prices go up, you win, prices go down and the market is flooded? Collection enhanced

Like a crypto boom I think a watch boom should happen too, crypto's are usually valuable as they are limited, vintage watches are not only limited but they are actually decreasing in quantity as they perish, but being perishable also works against this theory as, if you are a potential investor, you can't easily assess the state of the watch, so maybe it's the #1 issue, eBay's recent authenticity guarantee etc. might tackle this issue, but I haven't yet seen anyone myself dive into collecting (investing) because of it

Doesn’t matter if it’s gold, watches, houses, or stocks - you want to buy cheap and sell at the top of the curve. In this inflation-driven market, now is the worst time to buy anything unless you have to. The price on that Speedmaster you are considering is significantly higher than it was a few years ago, and it will likely not maintain that price when the market cools.

I have owned probably around 100 watches over the years. Of course not all at one time, I would typically sell one, buy one. So I have flipped a good amount of watches over the last 10 years. It took me a few years to figure out what I like, and overall, I'd estimate I'm even if I compare watches sold to price of purchase. Basically made a few bucks here, lost a few there, but it's a hobby, so I'm happy to be break even.

As far as parking some cash, I totally get it. But as I try to figure out same, watches are not even on the list of considerations.

Bought 7-8 years ago. If my original intent was to park this money, then I just lost a ton of cash, because this is my favorite watch and I won't ever sell it.

Best watch to hold its value is a Speedmaster.

But no watches under $2k are not a good bet to hold value to save for a $5k watch.

Buy bags of wheat, the price of wheat is going to go crazy in a few months …….Trust me 😉
My wife actually got into wheat commodity via her broker. We don’t do much commodity stuff and tbh making money off of world crisis doesn’t sit well with me but that’s what all the big boys are doing the percentage in moves is kind of frightening tbh but we are just small players so it’s not changing our lives but people are making crazy money off this stuff it is so weird how the world works. People suffer, others get rich off it. Seems backwards to me.

Went to the supermarket a few days ago and sunflower oil section was empty the day after news articles of supply lasting only for max 6 weeks. On the local craigslist already people were putting bottles up for sale.
