Pretty ham fisted job they made of it, looks as if it may still be possible to recover some of the numbers.

    And to show them ???

    I asked the Seller.....

    Dear alfandsaf1234,

Greetings! I'm sure you noticed the SN of this piece was deliberately destroyed - this could be a sign of bad news. Perhaps you should indicate this important detail in the item's description.

    Cheers,

    The Seller's response......

    Dear,

Or perhaps its cause the watch has been around a long time and has a lot of wear on it.

    Cheers
    Eric

    Really? ::facepalm1::

I take it the listing doesn't break any ebay rules ?
Five bidders who seem to bid on watches ?

I'm a new collector just getting started, and I tell you, the amount of fraud, deceit and evil lurking about makes me want to reconsider golf !
Without this forum, there isn't a doubt in my mind that my watches would just be put back in the drawer.
I collect vintage Pings and I thought that was fraught with peril but it's not even close !
I guess it's the big money involved and the relative anonymity of the Internet.
On this Good Friday, God Bless the administrators, moderators and collectors here that have a genuine love of the hobby and try to advance their principles without hidden agendas or motives.

    Stolen watch, really?

If you look a the seller in question he is clearly NOT a vintage watch seller, he's a pawn broker, selling on eBay since1999 with 100% feedback.

He could easily have turned the rotor to cover the serial number, but instead he posted lots of large clear photos of the watch so the bidders on this no reserve auction could make up their minds.

As for the serial number, watchmakers have been known to do some inexplicable things, which is what I suspect has happened here. Remember these things we now covet were once simply watches, given no special reverence or significance during their previous lives. The defacing of the number was clearly done quite some time ago, otherwise you would see bright shiny metal, and actually I bet if you had the watch in hand you could make out the number.

These are all valid possibilities and good points to highlight. I guess, everything is possible.

Isn't it also true that this watch should have come with a Cal 565 movement? If past repair of the movement involved swapping out the piece containing the cal and part number (train wheel bridge?) would it not have been the 'responsible' thing for the repairman to void out the serial number?
    Just an observation...

Cal 563 would be correct for USA delivery 166.024.

I wasn't accusing this seller of it being stolen but being that removal of serial for this year and caliber is highly uncommon so to have done so would be on intent either to conceal the identity of the dealer or if it was stolen no way to check against records. It might have been done a long time ago for whatever reason. Now for his explanation that is such ridiculous statement about it being old and seen wear. Just buyer beware.
