Do i have radium dust everywhere? 1959 Seamaster

Hi Everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I'm hoping to restore an old battered 1959 Seamaster. I'm worried that it's actually covered in Radium or Tritum? I've heard mixed things about removing this (via a sealed bag, in ventilated room etc).

Serial: 17785850
Movement: 600
Case: 14750 61 SC

The hand's lume has disintegrated and put dust all over the dial. When I shine a UV torch on it the green dust and remaining markers glow a bright green. With no UV light it appears a dull white colour.

I've enclosed two photos. Any advice or info would be great (likewise if anybody knows where i could obtain new hands as Cousins UK dont have any genuine ones available).

Thanks in advance

That dial, with lume and ‘coat hanger S’ will be radium unless it’s been relumed and that doesn’t appear to be the case.
Personally I’d have that in a sealed dial holder while I decide what to do.

Yup it's sealed in a plastic bag currently while i research the best methods at completely removing all the offending material (seems there is a fair few methods, most of which involve lots of water, patience and taking care to get all the dusty bits)

Depends how often you’ll be doing this (or with how many watches) but I have a Geiger counter (about £80 from Amazon) so o know for sure which of my watches have radium.

Well i do love vintage and esp older watches so seems like a worthwhile investment given they're only around £100. I guess its best to just assume they are if in doubt really...

Presumably something more robust than a supermarket Ziploc?

well a ziplock with alumiminum foil wrapping. I'm more concerned that its spread tiny specs on my desk... went over the entire thing with a UV light and hoovered but going to have to deep clean to be sure...

What you see is the phosophor. The radium byproducts are a gas and they are long gone. What remains is lead and more raduim which is a metal similar to lead and gold but unstable like posters on a web forum. Alpha particles only travel a few mm anyway before decaying, I have to hold the Geiger counter cm away to get a reading above background. Sometimes I wipe down the bench with a 99percent wipe, but that it to kept the dust to a minimum.

I would not eat any of it. If it make you feel better an N95 mask might be of use. I sometimes use that. In some ways use the finger cots as there is going to be trace amounts. One should wash ones hands. Which one should do anyway. Not licking them or picking ones nose is also advised.

The problem with radiations is is is statistical. If it gets inside the body it can build up and eventually damage a cell which then can become cancerous. (Or so they say I often get things wrong.) Poison on the other hand is a chemical reaction much easier see and measure. The Heavy metal acts like any other heavy metal in the body. Most is flushed away. Others settle in and become part of your being.

Ventilated room is better than sealed bag as there is more room for things to spread about. I got a Geiger counter on recommendation from other here. I see others posted while I was writing this. I guess they do not show the Disney film with mousetraps anymore. Google "Our friend the atom." At one time it was in the public domain, but the mouse may have clawed back the copyright.

As for the hands good luck. Omega is controlling the supply. I spent most of the week searching for 351 hands. Curiosly the hand I think that may be the correct one does not glow as much. The other hand glows like your photographs and the more generic AS and chronograph hands. Not sure when Omega started to use lumanova. (and too lazy to look it up.)

Ofrie did have some hands. I think one is going to have re lumed hands anyway.

I have been experimenting myself with craft store glitter and paint. I spilled some, and now my trash can glows when I turn off the light. I could get the branded stuff, but it looks and works the same at a fraction of the price. I clean this with 99 percent and a duster. What you do not want is it concentrated, where it is more likely to affect others.

I am told drinking copius amounts of cheap beer, is the best thing one can do with suspected exposure. Back in the day when they were tested the radium girls, the ones who drank every Friday after work had no systems.

And since someone else posted while I was writing this. A ziplock will block any alpha radiation. on the other hand it concentrates the gas. And the gas is what you do not want to consume. This gas occurs naturally in the US and many houses have radiation detectors and extractor for it in the basement.

I think I will hit reply before the next person does. (And I forgot to turn on spell check. So I editied it to add a few points that came in while I was writing and editing.)

Wow dude - thanks for such an in depth and USEFUL response! I type while while sipping my 4th beer 😉

As a modeller i have no issues re-luming the hands (as you say cheap lume dust and some humbrol clear cote). My concern is making sure ive got rid of every last little bit of the nasty stuff. I will double glove up and remove the hands, wipe off the dust and remove dial tomorrow all in bags (vented ofc). I was hoping to just get new hands because a) i think these are plated and thus wont ever shine like new and b) the watch is a bit of a pig anyway so not fussed keeping it original - my real issue is working out which ones fit.

Ofrie said they didnt have Cal 600 ones and neither did Cousins so i guess i need to work out what other hands would fit. They dont have to be lumed ones; i just want to be sure they fit the movement correctly as i'm still in the learning phase if you can't already tell haha.

Thanks again for the super handy info!!

I've worn my radium watches with no discernible effects. Well ... other than growing this prehensile tail.

But that would have happened without the watch right? 😜

Wow dude !

Dude? I guess on the net know one knows you are really a cat.

I do not worry. As I said in the other thread I lost two siblings to cancer before I was six. And they were younger. There is a good chance we were all exposed as there was something on the other side of the fence that did not exist. Well It was miles away. Now they are blaming Monsanto for why we can not eat fish in the river. This quarter is heavy industry. It is why I have money for watches.

I have had these watches in drawers and boxes for nearly 30 years. If they have not killed me now then what? (And I am still feeling meh.)

Most of the stuff written about this stuff is to sell soap or cover ones corporation from. If you can not win the lottery, go for a class action lawsuit. And what wonderful thing when it is something you can not taste touch see or feel.

No wonder for thousands of years people believed in fairies, angels and daemons. Anything you tell me three times is true.

Don't worry too much. Take it outside as is, have 2 different brushes . One more coarse artist paint brush first. Brush away from you and if you have, wear a noal 95 mask. Then a fine artist, dash hair brush. Leave the hands on and move them around during that process to get all areas . What ever breaks off, would have broken off anyway. Then check again and report back.

So i manged to get all the lume off the dial but i can't get all the lume out the hands and rather than mess around with Radium i think its best to source some new ones.... which is proving tricky.

Possibly stupid question but is there a way to tell if hands from different movements will fit the Cal.600?

I've noticed other models with similar looking hands in the same style. They don't have to be exact but a close match would be nice.

Interesting video about radium when you have time:

I would try Tim at https://omegaaddict.com/ for the hands.

Watched it - really great video, and subscribed to the channel as seems they've some great talks. Thanks. Now just to find me some hands hehe
