Dial scratch

Hi guys

I have a vintage omega 166.010.

I’ve noticed today that there looks to me to be a scratch appeared and I’m sure it’s on the dial. I’ve turned it all ways up and it doesn’t look like it’s on the glass. It doesn’t move with the angle etc and whilst hard to tell it looks like the second marker passes over the top of it.

The hands all look to be in place etc and the dial scratch, if it is on the dial, is towards the outer part of the face where the raised batons are (so I don’t think a hand could have dropped to cause it.)

If it is a dial scratch, any idea could this have happened? I have no idea at all.

thanks

Luke

It's pretty common to see scratches on dials. Not desirable, of course, but common. However, it's hard to say much without good macro photos.

But appear out of nowhere? What would cause that.?

A picture is worth 1000 words. Any chance you could provide a snapshot what you're looking at?

I had been trying and with just an iPhone it’s tough going. These are about as good as I can get (in the red ring.)
There are a couple of other dot scratches on the dial near the 10 baton - which is fine. They were always there and aren’t as bad as this photo makes out.

You might not be able to fully see but the scratch in question near the 11 baton is a thin line with a little hook at the end.

Might just be a crack the lacquer that coats the dial. I have the same model and it has a lot of bubbling in the dial that is obvious under magnification but doesn't really appear on the wrist.

Old watches are old. after all.

Done, at least as best I could!

It's hard to see, but I would not call that a scratch. More like a small stain IMO.

The images don’t properly present what it looks like. It is a black hairline mark. I can’t believe it’s a stain. It wasn’t there half way through yesterday and then it suddenly appeared next time I looked. The watxh wasn’t open for anything to stain it

I dont see it on picture but this can be crack on dial "paint". A year ago I had one Omega cosmic on hand, dial was perfect on morning and next day there was crack alkost 0.5cm on dial. I did remember I hit with watch on edge of table when It was on my hand.l that day....

That would have to be some hit to damage the dial too right. And the glass is perfect, so I don’t think it took a ding anywhere.

anybody serviced or cleaned the watch at some point?
Not between the scratch not being there and then appearing. It was literally just on my wrist. Looked down one moment and not there. Looked down next moment and there

Laser eyes are not necessarily a good super-power to have.

Is it possibly some small fiber or hair?

I guess it’s possible, but I can’t get it to move from the spot I originally saw it in.
It looks like a small hook shape line on the dial

If that is as bad as it is, and it doesn't get any worse...I'd ignore it and enjoy a lovely watch.

Watch dials, like everything, decay over time. It’s how patina develops. You’re surprised that you saw it appear suddenly but the likelihood is that what you see is the latest stage in a process that until this point has been invisible to the human eye.

sometimes things apparently just appear on a watch but most likely this is due to the attention you put into it. many times i discovered details after much examining certain watch. it s about perception and attention i believe in this case
