Dial dilemma: two 145.022-74: which should stay?

Hi all,

I have two almost identical 145.022 - 74. I am willing to keep one of them but can not decide which, since both dials are with issues. I would like to have your opinion, let me have your vote for the better one:

The one on the left has hour markers that have a nice light yellow character, but when you focus on them each has something spread around the markers that sits on the dial beneath it. Not very pretty when close-up, but can hardly be seen from far or under the crystal. here the uncased dials:
The other one has hour markers in a light green-gray tone. Apart from that they are even and in excellent condition:
I appreciate your thoughts on this.

Best,

caselock

I’d move both on a find one with a great dial. The smudges on the first would really bother me and I don’t like the mint green lume often seen on dials from this period.

I would sell the smudgy one and keep the minty one. Its in good shape, the minty green doesnt bother me at all its correct for the period and Im not sure why people dont like it, but to each his own.

I like the one in very good shape. For now, yellow lume is more collectible, but at some point the green tinted lume will be too. It will get harder and harder to find very nice examples.

I'd keep the one on the right. The left dial doesnt appear to be in great condition and also has marks from where the hands were removed, and that detracts from its appeal.

If you have to keep one of the dials, then it has to be the one on the right.
The left dial is very damaged, and I do not think it is worth a relume.

I also understand @Davidt , and there are often dials here for sale.

Good luck with your project, and let us know!

The right one is arguably nicer. Also, so are the hands on that one. The latter makes me wonder; are you fixed on the dial condition alone, and what do the case(s) look like?

I would keep the one on the right as it has the better dial and hands. The greenish lume is period correct and a charm on its own. The left one does have its attraction in showing its age, like me when i look in the mirror in the morning 😂 , and your hardly notice the aging from normal distance but better ones can be found i think with the yellowish patina.

Hi,
thanks to you I have a clear vote for the greenish one. There is nothing special about these two watches but for the moment I would be happy with one of them as a daily wearer.

Of course that would be the best option in the long run. But these yellow Tritium dials are not easy to find.... meanwhile I keep the greenish one.

You both have a good point there: maybe its just a fad to have yellow markers. I fear that a certain number of minty dials were relumed for that reason and are no longer original....

My minty 220 bezel from 1970 says hello. First Speedy got it serviced and wear it a lot. Minty refers to color, not condition on this one Dinged up bezel
