I'm new to the forum and looking for advice. When my father passed last year I found his speedmaster in the box just as I remembered it as a young man. I would like to have it serviced or restored. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Very sorry to hear about your father, but what an awesome thing to remember him by. Double-signed, and in the serial range for a transitional 145.022-68 IIRC (which would be cool), with the original box and papers.
Edit: Go slowly with the "restoration". It really shouldn't need anything other than a movement service. The watch looks great, and it is highly collectible in its original state.
Should I try to polish the crystal? If so leave it to a professional?
there are some good threads on polishing crystals. Why don’t you read some of them and then see if you feel comfortable doing it. Personally I do it routinely.
Beautiful heirloom to remember your dad.
You don’t need to restore this just service and maybe like you say give the crystal a polish. Probably best to give the forum an idea of where in the world you are. There are many reputable and careful watchmakers who would treat and preserve your watch with the best of care, which the members would be only to happy to recommend to you.
good luck
