Crown gauge

Hello guys,

The other day I received this:

I’m trying to sort them out, initially by stem size. E.g 0.9mm thread which can be used on stem for 30T2 movement etc. So I bought myself the bergeon 6740 gauge.

Some are so fiddly however that it’s hard to hold up onto the gauge to even thread them on. Would a crown winder tool enable me to test these out more efficiently, or do you have a better method?

Secondly, I have noted already that some go above and beyond the 1.2 thread on the gauge. Perhaps they fit a 1.3mm thread or 1.4mm etc. is there another gauge I can buy which goes up to bigger sizes or do you think a micrometer will suffice in measuring these?

Oh while I’m here, does anyone have a recommendation for a matt to use on my desk when doing simple tasks, even changing spring bars when they fall out are difficult to see on my dark surface… let alone little screws or crowns!

Thanks everyone 😀

Ollie

Disclaimer that I'm an amateur, and have never seen this many crowns together to have had this problem.

I would first sort them based on color, and then separate tap 10 crowns (0.9mm), as those are the most common ones for wristwatches based on my limited experience. Measuring each one would take forever unless you are planning on selling them individually. For the rest of them, I would make two groups with smaller than 0.9mm and larger.

I would be very interested if you find any crowns for the Hamilton H3 46374b in that pile. I have two of those with missing crowns, 0.9mm with a 2.5mm opening. Looks like this:

I like the idea of a crown winder, seems like a good idea. Either that or a pin vise of appropriate size range.

I tried a pin vice, but when opened wide enough for the crown it was way inside the outer ring (is that called the collet?) so wasn't suitable for this purpose... and even if i could have secured it tightly using the vice, wouldn't have extended out far enough to be able to wind on the gauge... so yes, I think Crown winder is likely the route I take 😀

Can't help with the crowns but on my bench I have a fairly large cut off from laminate flooring as the base. I use high quality white paper (note, must be good or you'll get fibres from it). I use the paper once then turn it over, then chick it away. Useful for making small notes as you work too.
