Dear Hive,

Can anyone estimate how much it would cost to relume a vintage Speedmaster dial?

Also, how much for dial and hands?

Thanks.

James Hyman had this estimate on his website with conditions it depends on the watch itself

The text in red is really messing with me.
I can not decide whether I find the disclaimer great or outrageous 😅
I think it's great personally. He talks about it in some of his YouTube videos.

I think Lukas in Germany is one of the best I’ve ever seen. Look up Horoluma on Instagram or horoluma.com I think he’s around $550 but you can email them photos to get a closer estimate

Wow. This is a fantastic tip. His website is very cool, with the ability to see before and after photos. [https://horoluma.com/dial-restoration/].

The after photos not only look better, they retain the feel of the original. It's what I image an art restoration would do with a painting. The restored dials don't look like they are brand new, just repaired to their best potential.

This is a very helpful resource. I don't own a watch needing restoration but am considering a watch that has a nice case and really nice bezel, but lost lume. (I usually am okay with dirty lume, but when lume that is worn away completely, there is no internal struggle on whether or not to relume.) I'm more excited about the watch after seeing what Lukas can do. It's currently overpriced but if we can agree on a fair price then this gives me the confidence to proceed.

Thanks again.

Dial and hands last year were €425 + €100 to repaint hands + shipping. I am quite happy with the result!

Another comp for the mix, $300 AUD from Lewis Watch Co in Perth. Likely that it’s gone up since 2024, but Adam is a top bloke who does great work.

Cheers,

You are absolutely right. Keep the patina and mitigate the damage so it is no longer distracting. The big thing with art is that it should be reversible as the restoration and the original change at different rates so they will eventually be out of step with each other and the restoration will have to be redone. We are yet to see how this process holds up over time with restored watch dials.
