Yes this is a legitimate Constellation reference.

The case on this, while dirty and neglected, actually looks to be in pretty good shape.

    Thanks!

Separate question, I've seen stainless connies with gold case-back medallions (like this one) and with stainless medallions. Is there a rule of thumb as to when they should be gold vs. stainless?

The earlier stainless steel references - all of the 4 digit ones and I think all of the 5 digit ones also had gold observatory medallions on the back. The stainless steel cases with the 6 digit case references (which started in the mid 1960s or so) had the steel medallions.

    Hi Mike.
There is one exception for that : the Ref 168.001.

Ok, probably the earliest of the 6 digit references.

And the price paid may or not may not be a good price.

    Ha.

Once it's in my hands and checks out okay I'll share. I just like to be able to tell my wife "I paid X, but the experts say it's worth X+Y, so I'm making you money already!" So now I just pray that that is indeed the case...

If the dial is pristine it is worth more - if the dial has blemishes like acne that aren't apparent in the listing pictures then it is worth less.

You're referring to more or less than the BIN price?

The watch looks fairly crisp, particularly the bezel. Don't let anyone lose those edges with aggressive polishing! I don't know what you paid, but if it was less than the B.I.N. price I think you did well.

FYI: 6 digit reference numbers started in 1962 / 1963-ish.

The bezel is really what drew me in, and it looks like there are facets on the outside corners of the lugs as well.

Pictures aren't great (especially of the case back), so I'm tempering my expectations, but based on the feedback here I think I did okay.

Watch arrived a couple days ago, just had the chance to take some pictures. Overall, I'm happy (especially for the $650 I paid ;) )

A bit of polywatch and cleaning the case went a long way. The champagne dial looks pretty good, some minor patina (yellowish color, not spots), the applied Omega and logo look like they have some tarnish in the pictures, but it is very difficult to see in person.

Should I be at all worried that the star is slightly tilted?

Movement looks pretty clean (got rid of that fuzz near the balance after seeing it in pic), and is keeping good time. However, I think the stem may be too short, or the crown too small? It is difficult to wind at the crown while in the case but not difficult (maybe just a little stiff) when taken out of the case. I think, considering what I paid, I will probably get this serviced sooner rather than later.

Any thoughts / comments are welcome and appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Adam

Case is nice, nice facets..The dial is a little aged but not terribly so, probably magnified by your detailed pictures. Overall you did very well I reckon. I wouldn't mind an earlier steel pie pan with gold medallion! ;)

Don't worry too much about the star. There have been quite a few original Constellation dials with what we affectionately call a "wonky" star.

Nice watch - it looks good.
