Constellation Pie Pan and Seamaster: Legit?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been on the hunt for either (or perhaps both) a vintage seamaster and vintage constellation pie pan. I’ve learned a ton from all of you and I think I’ve found what’re two great pieces. But of course, I am hoping for some feedback from all of you wonderful and far better informed people.

Just a heads up, I’m aware the strap on the constellation is some replacement. Further, the crown on the constellation no longer has omega symbol. I’m wondering if someone is able to tell if it was polished off or perhaps is not original.

Further, I would greatly appreciate an approximate fair market value for each piece based on your opinion. I have a sense of this value but I would really appreciate additional input.

Thank you very much for any input you can provide. I really appreciate it as I continue my hunt for my first Omega 😀

Would greatly appreciate some thoughts on the constellation as the auction ends soon and I’m trying to make my decision! Thanks!

The pictures quality are very poor, can't really do much, could be original dial, case is soft, will need a new crown, and a movement service. About value, have you checked ebay sold/complete listing, how much are you valueing these?

They both look mostly legit to me, at first glance. The plating has peeled/worn off of the Constellation crown, I would probably want to replace it. I think that the sweep hand on the Seamaster may be a replacement, the shape just doesn't look right, but double-check me on that with some research. The ribbon dial is nice.

It's hard to judge overall condition based on the photos, unfortunately, but if you have been following auctions, you probably have a good idea what they're worth to you.

I think that nanjingcigarettes and Dan S covered pretty much everything that needed to be said about the Constellation and I agree. As for the Seamaster, I have that same reference. The second hand actually looks correct to me and the curtain dial appears to be in nice shape. It looks like the case is in good shape, although the case back has some pitting and a bad gouge, probably from a botched opening attempt. It also looks like someone etched some numbers onto the back of one of the lugs -- maybe the serial number? See the photos of the back of the watch and look at the lug on the lower left. The crown is correct. The movement looks clean. Photos of mine below for comparison. Did you purchase either one?

Possibly there is some motion-blur in the OP photo that is making the sweep hand look less tapered. That may be what was bothering me.

TBH, it's always hard to evaluate watches with such poor photos. I will sometimes buy watches based on poor photos, but only if I'm getting a great bargain. Sometimes they turn out nicely, but I have to price in the added risk.

Yeah, the photos made this one a tough call. I was watching it on eBay and it sold for $722. You would have to add in the cost of a service (at least I would) and that case back would bother me. It also looks like the hands have some corrosion, but that's easily fixed.

As was already mentioned the case on the Constellation is soft. I was also thinking possible redial based on inconsistent hash mark spacing, some even look a bit crooked. The rest of the text seems pretty good though so I'm not sure.

I had the same concern about the dial, Alex, but what I noticed when I zoomed in on the photos is that parts of the crosshair are faint and almost missing in certain areas which is suspect. I didn't raise the issue because the photos aren't great and I frankly wasn't sure whether the watch is a redial.

I wasn't sure whether the cross-hairs were faded, or if that was due to scratches in the crystal. I tried to see if the faded sections were in the same locations in photos taken from different angles, but it was difficult. Sellers do themselves no favors with poor photos.

Agreed, Dan. I think that all things considered, the Seamaster was the better choice.

Hi all,

Thanks so much for your input. You’ve given me a lot more to look out for. I didn’t end up buying either - main reason being the quality of the photos made it very difficult to get a sense of the condition (as many of you mentioned).

Thank you all again.
