Constellation Circa 1966 - needs work

Interested in any feedback. This is a sentimental piece, which unfortunately was subjected to a hatchet job some 20 years ago. I’m contemplating sending it in for the full blown $1500 restoration. Anyone have any experience with that?

I had a local guy pop the case back off and confirm legit Omega movement which all checks out. Not sure what happened to the original back, but am assuming that is something Omega can replace?

Finally, I think Dr. Frankenstein inserted a “rim-spacer” with minute marks between the dial and the crystal. I’ve never seen that on any vintage Constellation. What a mess!

I can't tell if the case is original or not. When the back was taken off, did it have an Omega signature inside?

There were some Constellations made with plain backs. These were supposed to be engraved for presentation purposes. Even if Omega had a replacement caseback, they are going to charge a lot more than $1,500 for a solid gold one. What is strange to me is that your case does not look like a screw-back case.

Maybe the case is not original at all? If not, then a new Omega case for this watch would be made of "unobtanium". You'd be better off melting this one and put the money towards a non-running one with a proper case.

The "rim spacer" might be related to the incorrect crystal on the case. Original Omega crystals for these would normally have a gold retaining ring on the inside.

Omega did make some "gradient" dials in various colors for the "C" case Constellations. The pictures provided aren't clear enough to make a determination on the dial. The hands are wrong for sure, but these may be able to be sourced.

I'm not by any means saying that this watch is all correct. It just may not be as bad as you think.
