    Hi guys

Hello from London! This is my first post and also my first foray into vintage Omega and I'm hoping you knowledgable folk can help me on a couple of pieces I've been looking at and whether they are good buys in terms of quality and value... As you'll see, I'm interested in something that's in good condition and that has been maintained / refreshed to a high standard. Also like the idea of the cal 564/565 with quickset date as this would be more of an occasional piece

Constellation - have asked the seller on this one and everything is original including the glass. Refreshed in 2015 and serviced in 2018

Seamaster - seems to have been refreshed and serviced by the seller (who is a watchmaker) and glass has been replaced with a non-Omega equivalent

    Many thanks for your help!

A refurbished Constellation at 1600pounds??
At that price you can get something that is in good condition with original untouched dial with change to spare.
If a "refreshed" piece is what you want, you can easily get them for Much Much Much less.

and btw, you copied the link of that constellation twice.

You make a good point, and you highlight my limited knowledge here, so thank you! I will check what exactly has been "refreshed" on the constellation vs what is original.

I did mince my words earlier - I would like an original untouched piece in good condition. Where would be the best place to look for these?

Here is a link for the second one (which has definitely been re-touched):

    Thanks

The Connie is expensive, especially considering. It's nice and I have no real problem with the seller asking what he is (let's face it, there's a lot of time and skill gone into that watch) but it's still expensive. What's the asking price on the Seamaster?

Edit: saw your link in the subsequent post ... damn.

Hang around here and educate yourself. Keep an eye on the OF Private Watch Sales board. You'll find good watches at fair prices. Last, stay the hell away from eBay and Chrono24 until you educate yourself.

I dont want to be rude but are you serious about the connie? Seller does not say in the add the dial is repainted and for EUR 1800 you can buy a beautiful pie pan iso this domed monster... It's a ridiculous price IMO.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. I say it's expensive; you say you don't want to be rude but the price is "ridiculous" ?

I was more referring to the remark that you dont have real problems with the asking price of the seller. I do. But everyone can have his own opinion of course...

OK, let's assume you're the seller. You buy a reasonable Connie at auction but it has issues with the dial (and let's say the wrong crown, it's not been serviced in 20 yeas, the setting lever's worn and a wheel or two broken). You still have to pay £800 for it because that's the market. You then service and repair the watch; you find (or worsen have to buy) a replacement crown; and , repair the dial. You're now into this watch for over £1200. You then pay Chrono24 for the privilege of selling the watch. The government want their slice in tax. All told, you're making £250 on an £800 investment and the time you've put in.

Do you begrudge the asking price now, even if it is expensive?

But serious, £800 for a broken and bad connie is not the market. You just pay to much for a broken watch... You can find a good domed connie for £800 and then sell it maybe with a bit of profit.

I've bought three 1950's Omegas in the last 4 weeks, all at auction. Each one was over £500 at the hammer (add in 25% commission, and you're over £625 each). Connies go mad. All of them. So much so that I won't touch them. I've seen absolute train wrecks sell for over £2000. When you add the level of complexity with the dials, cases, texts, movements and so on I'd only buy one if Phil gave me the thumbs up that it was perfect. Anyway, bottom line is that I leave them alone.

So, if I check the recent sales for Connies (dome dial only):

McTears - good one, realised £1200
Holgates - (not a good example as this was a Franken, totally incorrect dial and other issues) - £400
    Ewbanks - £920
    Ewbanks again - a later version, £1400
    Pier's - (28mm in steel), £400

Add on up to 25% (average is 24%) for the commission. All prices from the-saleroom.com's price guide and are actual auction results from 7th Aug back to the beginning of June.

At the prices I see quoted sometimes, it makes me seriously consider selling off my watches through chrono24 rather than OF. The guilty conscience of having exploited a bunch of n00bs will no doubt quickly wear off when I roll around in mountains of cash...
