Hi everyone,
I'm thinking about bidding on this Constellation 14393 2. What do you think about it? Do most parts look original? Would 1100/1200 euro be a good price?
Many thanks for helping!

Hi Yves,

I have to admit that I am a big fan of those rail track dials.

There are some points you should be aware.

- the watch is polished which means that the lugs are very soft and you can hardly see the stars on the medallion on the case Back
- the crown is not the original crown which belonged to this watch
-concerning the dial I am not sure whether this is just patina or if this is a moisture Problem
-should have cal 561 (can't see this on the pics)

In my opinion the price is a bit steep for a gold plated constellation in this condition.
Best duffy

There's also significant rotor rub on the movement. That being said, if you like it visually, it's nothing that can't be dealt with and I don't find the price too absurd. Not a bargain, but also not completely out of this world.

It would be a hard pass for me because of the case: edges are lost due to aggressive polishing. It looks like a soft lump now... 馃檨

Euro 1100 without extra for taxes sounds ok to me. Not too many Rail dials to buy ...... there will always be a better case around the corner. Then swap the middle case and sell the other one. Voila.....

Thank you all for the feedback on the watch and the price. Indeed, i haven't seen a lot of these rail dials and it stood out to me from the start.

Regarding the moisture problem. A good service could solve this I assume, with only the risk that some of the insides might have been damaged?

Other stupid question..I can really understand why people polish the lugs and the upper case..but why would you do it with the back? I've seen these polished medallions a few times indeed.

Is the moisture problem that people see this detail?

This is where the dial foot is located on this calibre and I suspect this is a dent due to careless handling when removing the dial. There is another dial foot just above the 4 O'clock marker.

You don't see many of this style so, I suppose you have to adjust your expectations if you want the Railtrack.

Cheers, Chris

Here is my 14394 which I received today.

It is my first constellation with a rail track dial - love it.

Nice watch and congratulations- but has it definitely got a solid gold dial? (I.e. a 14394 deluxe as opposed to a solid gold cased 14393)
If so, the watch probably deserves a thread of its own as I don鈥檛 recall seeing another solid gold rail track dial on OF.

In my opinion it is a 14394 but I can't prove it. Hands are solid gold. (I know that this doesn't prove that it is a de luxe but I have seen other rail track connies with inserts on the hands)

Inner side of the case back says 14393/4.

Some years ago I was hunting for quite a simelar example which is now on the hands of @Vanallard

I think this one is also a de luxe model.

Hi @duffy7

Thanks for the response - I'd forgotten about that thread.

I'm not saying it isn't a gold dial - in fact I rather hope that it is - the only way to know for sure would be to look at the back (it will be marked 18k) - perhaps if/when you get the watch serviced.
Unfortunately, where deluxe versions exist, all gold cases are double stamped so that they can be used for both 'standard' gold watches and deluxe watches.
I may be wrong but I think hands are gold plated - even on deluxe dials - and my 14392 deluxe has black inserts in the hands, to compliment the broad onyx inserts.

perhaps @Vanallard might chip in to confirm if he knows for sure that his watch has a gold dial?

FWIW here's a gold dial 14382. I'd venture that if the mirrored rail track is golden coloured, then the dial is 18K.

Sorry OP, for hijacking the thread 馃槜

that鈥檚 great thank you 馃憤
Where there is one, there will be more.
So, reasonable to think @duffy7 鈥檚 watch is a deluxe

I don't see a moisture problem..... Crown will be no problem to find.

I ended up bidding just a bit below and very happy with the purchase. Sorry for the newbie question- what's the best place to find new crowns? Watch markets or any site recommendations?

Good looking watch.
Since no-one answered you here and you also mentioned it in another a thread
No, the thick crown isn't correct for this reference.

There are two possible correct options:
The standard thin decagonal crown
The thin scalloped crown.

hope that helps

The thick crowns were used on several references in the 50s
IIRC, the last reference to use this was the 2852.

have a look at this essay from Desmond

Just seeing this now. I usually have all of my watches serviced but chose not to with the 18k rail track because it would be a bit devastating if the dial was inadvertently scratched. So can鈥檛 confirm whether the dial is solid 18k but it certainly looks solid gold IMO
