Confused on omega 1002.

Hello, for my 1002 movement the mainspring isn’t holding power. I replaced the mainspring but it still isn’t working. The train wheels all move freely but the power from the mainspring isn’t making it through because the pallet fork isn’t jumping like it should. Any idea what the problem is? Thank you.

Before placing the palette fork, do the wheels move when you turn the crown to wind it? Have you inspected all the jewels? As the novice I am, I've been confused about the orientation of the palette fork and have nearly installed it upside down. I feel like there are hundreds of things it could be based on the info given. I've never messed with this caliber, so I can't give many more ideas except that if the watch means much to you, probably best to give it to a watchmaker. There's a watchmaking subforum here where you might get better responses.

Thank you. Yes the wheels do move when I turn the crown, and yes I’ve looked at all the jewels, balance wheel moves freely too. This has me stumped, but thank you for your insight!

If the train moves freely with the pallet lever removed you need to install the pallet lever and use a fine brush to move the pallet lever from side to side (imitating the impulse of the balance).

If the escape moves by one tooth each "impulse", the problem could be between the balance assembly and the pallet.
If the escape does not move like that you may have a pallet stone problem.

Did you service the whole movement? If so did you replace any worn parts?

Did you use an Omega mainspring when you replaced it?

What braking grease did you use?

How are you diagnosing that the mainspring isn’t “holding power”?

What is the full wind amplitude in the dial down position?

Hello, the escape wheel does not move like that which was making me think the same thing. I ordered a new escape wheel and pallet fork and installed them just to be safe and still the same result, which is why I am thinking it is a barrel/mainspring problem. I am very new to taking apart watches so I appreciate your insight very much. Thank you.

Yes, I took apart the whole movement and cleaned/oiled. I replaced anything I thought that needed to be replaced including the mainspring, but I could have made an error since I am very new. I used moebious 8213 as braking grease. I used an omega mainspring for my movement that I purchased off eBay. I am not sure of the full wind amplitude. I am in belief that it is the mainspring because all the train wheels move freely and I can see the pallet fork moving back and forth with the power of the balance wheel, but somehow the power is not getting to the wheels because the watch does not stay running when the balance stops moving. Also, the pallet fork does move back and worth but does not “jump” because the escape wheel isn’t spinning which makes me believe again that it is the mainspring that isn’t holding power. I replaced both the escape wheel and the pallet fork but same result which again makes me belief it is something else such as the mainspring. Thank you!

There are a ton of different causes for this sort of issue - the mainspring would likely be last on my list.

There should be unimpeded movement throughout the train and ideally a small amount of backlash at the end of the run.

I sometimes will set up the train without a mainspring or pallets. Then use a dust blower to spin the wheels. There should be little friction on the train. Older watches can often have worn center wheel bushings.
Cracked jewels can also make for an 'art project' rather than a watch.

I put a new staff on one of the myriad of Landeron balances I have. The roller jewel table seems to be binding on the pallet fork arm. I wound up crushing the table with the staking tool. At least is is a practice watch.

Hello, this was not the case. There is definitely something that is causing friction between the mainspring to the escape wheel. I will keep trying to solve the issue, thank you for your help!

The train is spinning with the escapement and barrel removed but not as freely as I would like, there is definitely something that is causing a bit of friction which is probably enough to cause the issue I am having. Thank you for your help!

Too little end shake,too much side shake, wear on pivots, lack of cleanliness, and the list goes on and on...
