Coin or watch?

Thanks everyone, interesting thoughts and valuable advice. The coin goes back in the drawer. It’s not as if I need to get rid of it to create space and if I’m going to sell it, it’ll be for food money. I guess it’s possible that the money I could get for it would grow faster as part of a watch but who knows? I’m pretty sure the stamp collection won’t increase in value as well as a Rolex but I’m happy to leave that alone as well (although that is a source of pleasure so I have no desire to sell it).

If you're thinking about selling the Sovereign, this is a good time to do it. Gold is pretty high. I have a few living in my save deposit box. On the other hand, if the world all goes to hell you'll have a lot easier time bribing minor officials with a gold sovereign than with a rolex.

I have a ultra high relief double eagle. Very pretty coin. But it comes with a booklet and a display box. The book is pretty obvious stuff you could learn from wikipedia, and the box allows only the head side of the coin to be seen, but if I sell them it's no longer a complete set. But with all that stuff it won't fit in my save deposit box and takes up about 1/2 a cubic foot of precious closet space. So I might sell.

£100 when I really need it is going to worth more to me than £300 now, I feel. I’m more persuaded by your second point there, not that I’m some kind of prepper.
