Coffin markers

I recently acquired this vintage seamaster from 1958 case 2989 cal 501. I can’t find any others with the coffin hour markers. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I have this. I would say these are uncommon. As I recall, this is also a 5xx series and has the large hippocampus on the back.

Cheers, Chris

Coffin markers, coffin hands, coffin lugs... looks like the perfect watch for an undertaker.

It's a ref 2984 . . . 2989 would be a chronometer with a cal 505 movement.

Nice catch. The crown's original, shouldn't be changed for a clover.

So does that mean I have the wrong back?

No, your Omega is original thru and thru as far as I can tell. Since you're going to have to take it to a watchmaker for at least a crystal replacement (fortunately, original factory crystals are still available, albeit costly), my comment about the crown was meant more as a warning not to replace it for another more common type of crown (clover) usually found on Seamasters of this era.

Thanks. Having it restored soon. I’ll post it when she’s done.

The Melbourne Olympics Seamaster also has this kind of furniture.

Yes coffin case hour markers are on the 1956 olympic, too.
The spider lugs models 2984 have large hippocampus on back on early production, 2984_3 have small hippocampus.
They should go with decagonal crowns like Constellation, I think.

If you're having the movement serviced already, you might want to solicit opinions on refinishing. Normally, collectors prefer their watches unpolished and especially their dials untouched. If your watchmaker wants to polish or refinish the case, or send the dial out for refinishing, you should be aware of his intentions.

My sense is most aficionados would advise against any cosmetic 'improvement'.

Good advice. Wasn’t planning to have the dial touched and the case just barely polished to clean it up a bit.
