Message the guy and tell him you'll never buy a watch from him. $$ speaks.

I cant imagine how this is good marketing. Anyone who knows of Chuck Maddox would see this as an absurdity. Everyone else will say "Who the fudge is Chuck Maddox and why is this dude obsessed with his writings?" Both unethical and ineffective.

    Response:

"I respect your opinion and your right to it. I submit that there is nothing disrespectful or unethical about quoting a noted authority in relation to a particular product, be it a car, a watch, or a work of art.

He didn't just quote, he copied entire sections from the website including pictures!
I don't think Chuck had his material copyrighted, so not much can be done, except for potential buyers steering away from the seller.

Maybe I'm not up on copyright law, but I believe that even unpublished work qualifies for copyright protection in the USA. Since the work was published on Maddox's website, that's not even an issue.

The question I think is whether this represents "Fair Use" of a copyrighted material, since the rights would pass to the Estate.

He didn't even bother to crop off the copyright 2001 / Chuck Maddox information that was on the stolen pictures.

No - this is not a fair use question. He is using the material to promote a for-profit activity.
I doubt Chuck applied for copyright on his material, although he would still be protected. Its up to the current holder to pursue.

Well, the seller is from California Joe.

He might well have Channeled Chuck and gained his permission.

    Oooh a new reply:

"I have already discussed this issue with one of Chuck's long-time friends and collaborators, and he had no problem with my quoting Mr. Maddox. I am not passing off Chuck's words as my own, I'm merely quoting him.

Frankly, it's not such a big deal to ,me. If you had approached me in a polite and civil manner, I would have gladly removed the quotation, just to be nice. But since you chose to come on so high and mighty, I'm reluctant to do so. I am not a dealer, just a small private collector, and I don't appreciate it when someone who seems to have too much time on their hands has nothing better to do than attack my integrity.

    Get a life..."

Wonder he didn't name Chuck's long-time friend and collaborator.
Is it just me or does he represent himself as La Jolla Watches and not a "small private collector"?

    What a sleeze bag.
