Choosing Racing 9900 vs Moonwatch 3861

Not sure if these pictures will help or hinder. The measurements are just rough / quick as a guide and you will see it is a Sapphire sandwich 3861. I have never had any issues with the 9300 height and it will fit under a cuff ok. I like having a chunkier watch / some weight at times. I do not have big wrists. I have used the hour minute counter as a time zone clock which worked well. It is a pain that it does not have a quick set date but the jumping hour does compensate a bit and is great for travel. As I rotate watches and don’t use a winder manual an automatic does not make a huge difference for me. Long story short If you want a modern Speed master with date then 9900 racing is a good call. If you are drawn to the Speed master history and aesthetic at some point you will probably buy a manual wind – so better to go 3861 from the start maybe…… and you can use the Chrono as a date reminder (but most have a phone now for that as well :0)

Lastly Pictures are deceptive and people get away with much chunkier watches – I borrowed a Breitling Emergency once to compare with my 9300… makes it look ultrathin :0)

Thanks ...those 2 pics of showing them side to side really show how thin the new Speedy 3861 sits on the wrist.....

The 9900 model is about 1mm thinner (14.9mm) than the 9300 (16mm); not a huge difference, but worth noting. I have the white dial racing model (9900 movement) and an older 3750 moon watch. I really enjoy wearing the speed-racer and do so almost daily because of the date function and automatic movement. Nonetheless, it’s hard to recommend getting the speed-racer over the (3861 or older) moonwatch if you don’t already have the latter.
BTW, there are several mint condition speed-racers available at the well-known grey dealers, at good prices. I bought my speed-racer from a grey dealer, at a big discount off the retail price, and without sales tax. They are readily available in many dial colors and bracelet/strap options. Based on that and the long omega warranty, and I would be reluctant to pay retail (and sales tax) for a new one.

Good luck - you can’t go wrong either way!

9900 is no doubt a better watch, but it’s form factor…

I'm fully voting for a Pro vs Racing. To me the Racing is always missing the 3rd sub-dial hence looks always a bit odd.

I think the 9900 happens to look better on your wrist. Just my opinion.

Why is it a better watch?
