Of the modern Rolex, the Explorer II is the only one that even remotely appeals to me. For now, I'll stick with this one...
As for the people you spoke to, not sure I would extrapolate that too much...
That is a nice 1680 you've got there mate. Other than rarity, is there any other reasons why you ended up with red sub (vs white)?

I don't like them (pretty much any modern Rolex)

I can personally attest to this. About 4 yrs ago I was at Al's and he took at look at my BLNR GMT. After a bit of a struggle to find something charitable to say, I remember him saying something like "they did a decent job with the bezel". I knew going in that he wasn't a fan of modern Rolex so I appreciated the effort to say something nice, lol.

I have seen Al's red Sub in person and it is killer

And what's wrong with Timex?

What’s wrong with Timex, you ask? If you like them, post your address and I’ll send you a shoe box full! I’ve been looking for a home for them as the landfill is overflowing with Timex, and they won’t accept any more! Cheap watch my a$$. In a life time of buying such garbage (your words), you could well spend the equivalent of any decent watch, but you’ll end up with nothing. 0 times 0 = 0!

Thanks - the reason I have a Red sub (or any Sub) is that this was the one I was offered. I wasn't even looking for it at the time, but it was too good to pass up. I'm actually more of a 5513 fan, as I'm not particularly a fan of the cyclops.

what an absolutely childish tirade.

go buy yourself a nice Timex, you'll feel better.

or better yet, use your cellphone.

Wow, don’t hold back! Thanks for clearing that one up - I was concerned people were on the fence on this one, lest they appear childish watch snobs! Glad there’s no danger of that happening here 👍

i can appreciate the new timex reissue. size, no date. i wanted one but i had to put a clamp on buying just because i like to look at it., it just would not receive any wear from me. but it would be good for my watch museum just showing off your stuff though, other than taking pics for peeps in a forum.

speaking of this. does anyone have their own little watch museum? that is the perfect excuse to buy more and show them off

That's a great vintage Rolex - it very much reminds me of my 50th anniversary Sea Dweller, line for line... (where the larger size fits my large wrist better).

I donno but I got all my rolex from AD and i would never ever pay above retail. I believe those AD will check your account with them if you have any history then you have a big chance getting what you want. Try build relationship with your AD buy other watch that you like that your AD also cater. Bought my omega moonphase blue dial coz I really like it then a week after the manager called and offered me gmt batman. So don’t expect to walk into rolex AD and they will give you what you want. I asked for a deepsea james cameron and my AD said they should have one for me next shipping. By the way rolex quality is superb!

There are some modern Rolex watches I would not mind owning but I don't want them so much that I would pay over the odds for or wait x amount of years on a list.
I don't see any point in wasting energy on being annoyed at Rolex or the flippers. I will just buy other watches and if, in the future things change then I will see what's what then.
I have one vintage Rolex that, despite being quite small by today's standard, (36mm) wears quite big and gets quite a lot of wrist time. Not very blingy but nice to wear.

They are a charitable trust - much of their profits helps underprivileged kids attend school. Not true of any other watch brand.

For tax reasons, not for charity. The fact that they throw a few bones to charity has nothing to do with their legal status.
It does not mean what you think it means.

It is a family trust established after the corporate move from england to switzerland in the 1940s, and pays no taxes due to a legal loophole. Its purpose is to grow the business.

They actually keep the majority of their profits.

Do NOT for a moment think they are trying to save the planet.

Lots of private schools in the UK do similar - they open up their sports, science facilities etc to local state schools a few times a year under the guise that they're helping the community, building links, being nice etc but the reality is that if they didn't they'd lose their charity status. It's all a great big tax dodge.

I’m not defending Rolex. I appreciate the make and enjoyed the one I had. Sold on to finance an Omega I wanted. I’d like a Submariner but it’s outside of my price range. I do feel they charge too much for they’re watches but it’s what the market will accept so why shouldn’t they, they’re in business to make money.

I’m not bashing Timex, for many years they made a durable watch at a reasonable price. But with a riveted together pin escapement movement they were not meant to be serviced and so were quite literally designed to be disposable. Now they make nice quartz watches at affordable prices and I’ve considered one of they’re new mechanical pieces for my own small collection. Read the factory produced history, it’s quite good.

I am bashing the tirade of somebody who can’t have what he wants when he wants it’s. It reads like the rantings of a spoiled child.

These days I tend not to think\worry about Rolex, can't get worked up about something that I can't buy.

No one cares what you think, particularly Rolex.

It's just a watch.

I've had to educate my friends and family as their eyes glaze over about brands like Omega, JLC, Hamilton, Seiko etc.. but the moment you mention Rolex their eyes gleam because of the synonymy of Rolex with the luxury mechanical watch. The brand is sort of like an anchor, it'll get peoples attention enough for them to yes, buy a Rolex, but then maybe drop by and see what other brands are offering and a brand like that deserves all the respect it gets!
