This should have been a clue that all might not be well inside -- but the price I paid allowed for that. Whew serious disaster evaded.

I always wonder what the person who has opened a case is such a robust manner will actually be hoping to achieve once he finally gets his hands on the inner workings....

Worrying 😲

Nothing a polishing wheel can't fix.

I was trying to get a watch open a few years ago... I got frustrated and gave it one last try and popped it apart. I also managed for it to slip a little and pop the second hand off too. Still haven't gotten the watch taken care of / put back together. I spent about $100 for it and the case was pretty beat up and dial damaged when I got it so I wasn't to bent out of shape about it. I've since picked up some hands, a crown that should be right, and a replacement crystal, I just wish I had a local watchmaker i could easily bring it to and not just the guy with the kiosk in the mall.

After I successfully adjusted the time on my Speedy (despite Archer's suggestion that those of us who don't know what we're doing should keep our grubby little hands out of there!) I decided to do the same on a cheap Chinese diver (not a replica, that would be against the rules here). It was something stupid like 20 minutes fast. So, I popped off the back and adjusted the doohickey thing. Better. I adjusted it some more. Worse.

Ooops, so I fiddled with it a bit more until I finally succeeded in popping out the entire balance wheel assembly, destroying the spring in the process. It went on eBay at a substantial discount "as is".

I learned my lesson, and realize (now) how lucky I was with the Speedmaster. Although, to be honest, I took a lot more care with a $7K watch than a $200 watch.
