    Hi Forum,

My first post, these are pictures of my Dad's Speedmaster. I wanted to get him a better bracelet/band for his 85th as the one on it is not authentic. Anyway I am aware about the Moon Watch book and I have been on the very excellent www.speedmaster101.com. However at the moment I am unable to get the back of, I think I have worked out it is early (Dad thought 1965 from what he was told years ago), from 101 I this is Caliber 321 with the BASE500 Bezil (and the dot over the 90). I am not sure about the hands as the hour and minute seem original but not sure if the others are service replacements from years ago or not. Anyway any pointers would be great from the Omega Brains trust !! Much appreciated. Regarding the bracelet/band also please let me know as I think it would better sit or should have an Omega leather band (?).

PS Apologies as aware the watch needs a bit of a clean, managed to get most of the grim off the Bezil !!

Awesome! Stop, do not clean or try to open. Wait for expert opinions.

I would say with that Chrono hand it's either a 2998-5 or a 2998-4, some dash4s have the stick sub-registers.

With the alpha hour and minute hands, stick chronograph hand and stick sub dial hands it’s likely a 2998-4 or 2998-5.

More important than a new bracelet at this point, I would think about having a complete service on the watch by a reputable watchmaker, because it doesn't look to have been serviced in a long time, if ever. You have a very valuable watch there and this would only help keep it that way. Have the watchmaker disassemble the watch, clean, lube and assemble. Leave the original parts alone, as the value is in the originality of the watch. Also, do not try and clean the watch or open it. It looks like you already tried and put a few gouges on the case back. Leave it to a professional. You can find a bracelet while it is being serviced. An original bracelet will be hard to find and eye watering expensive, keep in mind.

Could also be a 105.002. Whatever, it is a desirable and beautiful watch that deserves (and will repay) specialist care. Where are you located so that OF members can recommend your best local watchmaker. Please don't ask Omega to service it.

Everyone, thanks for all your help and much appreciated. My Dad has just had it services by a well know watchmaker near Manchester UK and he confirms it went no where near Omega !! Also we have not tried to open it so the scratch could have been done a while ago. He bought it about 30 years ago from a small shop in Cornwall for £20. We wil do no more with it, do you all recommend a leather strap btw ? So the 2998-4 or -5 is the leading contenders ..were they pre 1962 ?

Unfortunately, that is not the original crown. That is a replacement. Original crowns go for about $350 to $500 now.

Case back gives away this watch is not a 105002-62, 2998-6, 2998-61 or 2998-62

Surprised not more people have noticed that

IMO the hour counter hand is very unlikely to have been swapped as it maintains a flat top - this hand is uncommon as it doesn't seem to be used after the 105002-62, basically saying this has always had stick hands so cannot be a 2998-3

So that makes it a 2998-4 or 2998-5

Just here to place my bet with everyone else! :)

    Good luck opening it up

Not all -3s had leaf hands, or am I wrong ?
It looks very very nice, the hour hand has a bizarre lume color, but the looks are gorgeous.
Only thing that bugs me is the filth around the case: how is it possible that it was serviced not so long ago ?

You should get this to Simon Freese or STS for a proper service if your dad or you wants to wear it. These watches are old and should be revised by someone in the know. Assume the photos were taken pre service? Anyway, this is a great find and a really valuable watch by now, congratulations!

Simon Freese is your man. When you meet him and you see what he can do for the watch without damaging its originality then you will understand why he comes so highly recommended by members here.

@Sharp - What are the caseback tells that make you so specific? I'm curious.
