Can't have your competition win the "That's What They Do In Britain/Europe!!" argument in the Marketplace.

And also the reason the US Watchmakers demanded "place of origin" legislation, and why all RR regulations designated any watch not made in America could never be a RR grade or a RR approved watch, till the 1950's.

And why we still use inches and gallons, and drive on the right side of the road.

Baked into the pie circa 1776-1783.....

Just wanted to share a new addition to the collection, an 18k pink gold, pink dial Patek Philippe pocket watch that I believe to be from the early 1940s. Movement number is about 930xxx, in case number 419xxx. A black and white image of the exact same reference, labeled “740,” is shown from a 1940s catalog I’ll put up shortly on my instagram feed (@MarktheTime there as well).

How many inches are there in a gallon anyway?

A bunch, too high to even count in one lifetime.
And this is the reason why we have an evolved modern counting system that uses washing machines and toasters.
How many Toaster's to the Washing Machine and how many Washing Machines to the Football Field. Simple really, might become a little cumbersome when we get to astrological distances but that doesn't really matter as the Earth is flat any way.

Well that depends on the gallon in question There are the pissey cheap and nasty, barbarous little US gallons and then of course we in the civilised world had the bigger, more generous, fulsome, regal and majestic Imperial gallons!......Truely KING sized as it were! So no confusion there.
And to further simplify matters we didn't use Football fields as a unit of linear measurement, too confusing as it depends on the code of football, for instance there is soccer, grid iron (what the US calls football), rugby union, rugby league, gaelic football and of course the only game worth watching Australian Rules Footbal!
All of which use different sized grounds.
We used the cricket pitch as a unit of linear measurement which is a much more universal unit at one chain long,
22 yards is counted as one 'chain'. Ten chains amount to 220 yards, or one furlong. Eight furlongs equals a mile
Simples!

Hyperbolic over exaggerated statements only reflect badly on the speaker. All know the US has the biggest gallon size of all, Huge, Biggly. Just Enormous. Crowd sizes too. Huge, engorged and throbbing crowd sizes.

Then of course we have regular inches and dick inches......9 dick inches = 3.96 regular inches......for some strange reason women are better at doing this conversion.

Also here in Australia we use the "bee's dick"and the "gnat's nasty" as small units of linear measurement

It's incalculable how much women can calculate.

And, as our Gov. Ann Richard's use to say, "in heels and backwards!"....(but that was about Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire dancing together)

But if you turn your head just right and squint, you can almost see my analogy.

The U S Gallon is the biggest? The U S gallon is .883 of the Imperial gallon! Canada used to use the Imperial gallon. Now that we have gone metric, the U S gallon is 3.875 litres. There are 4.564 litres in an Imperial gallon. The U S gallon is the biggest?

Thanks for saving the thread! Totally fun to have the same watch as pictured in the ad. Nicely done 😎. Here’s my first year of production 992b in a #11 case, as the ad says, my choice of dial 😊

Hamilton 992E

1938 21j movement encased in a Model 10 bar-over-crown case first introduced in 1936.

What sets this one apart, (other than the excellent condition😀) is the uncommon Heavy Gothic "Arrows Out" dial which indicates an Illinois Watch Co lineage.
Hamilton used squares whereas Illinois used arrows(in) at the numerals. Hamilton bought the Illinois WC in 1928 and in a 1936 materials catalogue this dial with "arrows out" is shown.

Arrows Out started to show up on the "Illinois" Bunn Specials after Hamilton bought Illinois in 1928.

Some 950L Hamilton's also had this dial, also in limited numbers

At one point, I had 2 992E models. A brother collector fell in love with my one 992E, and made an offer I couldn’t refuse. This is the one I kept. It is in a Model #7 bar over crown case. Serial number 2633444. Here is the pocketwatchdatabase site info on it. Made circa 1939. The 992E was superseded by the 992B in 1941. The 992B was quite different to the 992, and 992E.
