Shame they know what they got, but I can still regularly find nice silk dress shirts for a dollar at my local goodwill. Before anyone gets sassy about that, my goodwill is right next to the rich side of town, and many rich widows just drop off their dead husbands clothes. You would be amazed at what they have that they don't know they have.

I guess someone already bought it, and the page is no longer reachable.

Maybe there was a spike in traffic because it was temporarily down for me too, but it is back up.

Oh no the secret is out. I have been buying cameras and lenses from goodwill. There are some decent deals to be had. Film photography also is seeing a revival, as digital is becoming something boring the parents do.

Goodwill has always been savy to the value of watches as they often work with watchmakers to vet the donations. Or at least they did in the 1990s. I would also not be surprised if some of their job training involves watchmaking.

Gents silk shirts and ties makes wonderful clothing for dressing and making doll and puppet clothing.

I've also seen Goodwill knowingly (or at least ignore multiple emails) sell a fake Patek for several thousand. So as with everything else, trust your own eyes first.

Yep I fully agree. Tons of old redials and general old quartz there. Lots of diamonds in the rough however if you know what you’re looking for.

All watches are fake (innocent) until proven otherwise. caveat emptor.

This was the incident that changed their Watch policy.

Some are saying fake story on that one. Receipt just says jewelry and no mention of watch. Could have bought a junk item and say he bought the watch when in fact he already owned it.

Had a Goodwill close to my parts supplier and they had dealers coming in all the time and that was 20 years ago. Also had a manager that even did auctions on items she knew were not run of the mill.

Local Value Village (like Goodwill) has a dealers list and anything that looks positive they will give a dealer a call

They upgraded their website and during Covid the secret most definitely got out. Before there was definitely attention on some obvious items but not too much competition.

Now most items are far more expensive than the risk associated with however they may ship it, and the true condition it’s in vs their awful photos and “evaluation.”

Thankfully my local store still puts out vinyl and some older stereos, but most suspected big ticket items all get diverted for auctions on the site. That local store is then who ships out the item, which is what leads to such a wide variance in experience at that point.

12,600 final bid. Still a good deal. I was tempted. The case looked good, the dial not bad considering (no apparent mold, mostly intact numerals), numbers matched the production period, it had a gold movement, 8 pilar crown that is supposed to be flyback.

That would have been a great addition. Congrats to the buyer.

People seem to have no idea how to bid. Invariably, the winner has not previously bid and bids within the last minute or less. Everyone is just showing their cards and bringing more attention to the auction.

That watch was revealed here on Omega Forums:

Note that in this picture, the price tag is still attached to the watch. Could have been staged, but I doubt it.

The story was reported by local and national media at the time. I’m sure someone did diligence on it.

So I came back in after dinner and refreshed the goodwill page. Some watches were up that I did not really want but would not have minded for the price. There was less than a minute to go so I bid anyway.
Stupid website. It came up with the "Please login screen." Guess the tokens must have expired. Did not really want the watches, It was more in the chase of things. Still one would think that if the cookie is set, it should stay set.
