Buying My First Speedmaster Professional - Is This The One?

Hi all,

I am very close to finally buying my first Speedmaster. Always wanted one from the year I was born (1990), and I think I have found the one.

Can you help me whether the price is right for this?

Omega Speedmaster Profesional Moonwatch
Year 1990
Ref 145.022
861 cal
1479 bracelet
Plexiglass
No box - no papers (Not a big need for me, buying to daily wear the watch regardless).

Watch is in very good condition and supposedly had full service one month ago.
Seller wants EUR 4150 (USD 4558).

I am stumbling close to buying it, so any last heads up or advice I am happy to learn more.

Thank you.
Emilio

Too expensive imho. Not easy to judge based on these low resolution pictures but the hands don’t seem to be in good condition and the case has been polished. You can find better for less money.

If the case is unpolished and in good condition, I'd buy it for 4,000 US.

TY. Hands are looking okay on other pictures I have seen. Why does a polished case decrease the value so much?

It removes metal. Changes the shape and character.

If it's advertised as serviced recently, ask to see a photo of the receipt. Then see what you can find out about the watchmaker, and what the receipt says they did.

I’ve seen from between USD 4000 - 5000 on this exact cal 861 from 1990, and this one looks in very good condition.

Thank you everyone for your inputs. I think I’ll pull the trigger as I also want the watch by end of October as a date soon is very near to me.

you asked me if I was in the watch business, or the money business… Neither. I’m in the empire business

Let see if Emilio knows

You ask for advice but don’t seem to listen... what’s the point of asking?

Asking for advice does not mean you have to take it.

I thanked you and everyone for your input - I listened. Some also adviced to buy, and said it’s fair price others didn’t. Again, I really want the watch before a specific date and I feel like this should be the one, as it ticks all my boxes for what I see as a decent price. No one has specifically told me not to buy, only advice was that it may be a couple of hundreds too expensive in their opinion.

Congrats on the watch, hope you enjoy it and that it arrives for the special "day". 👍

For me it would all come down to how good the "service" was. If it truly had a "full service" as you were led to believe, that in and of itself can be worth $1000 (or more) on a watch from 1990. So in reality you may have paid only ~$3350 for the watch and another $1000 for the service.

I have had every one of my vintage watches serviced properly (even when the buyer insisted it had already been done...). The total cost to get to a fully functioning properly serviced watch can be much higher than the selling price of the watch. People don't trust claims of "fully serviced" due to the blatant over-use (dare I say outright dishonesty) that is so common, and so somehow this major point doesn't even enter into any discussions on what something is worth. Very strange to me... 😵‍💫

Thank you. It should arrive in time! I'm very excited about it.

I am fairly confident that the service is a job proper done, as the seller mainly makes his revenue from vintage watch services. He also provided me with a one-year guarantee, which is somewhat comforting when buying a watch as old as one self I believe. 😀 Thanks for your take on this as well. I think the recent service and the bracelet spikes up the price a bit compared to other similar models I have seen for sale here in Europe.
