Buy or not: Omega Suverän 2400-2

Hello fellow watch lovers,

I've been eyeing for an Omega Officer (black), or an Omega Suverän (black) as my first vintage mechanical watch. This one seems to be authentic to my untrained eyes.

Q1: Given the condition, should I get this particular item or continue searching?
Q2: What is a fair price range for this item to be paid?
Q3: What additional service should I plan for this item?

Seller's description:
"OMEGA, Sovereign, Cal 30 T2 PC, Series no. 10130067, Ref no. CK 2400, Boett no. 2400-2 / 3274, men's watch, 35 mm, steel, manual, plexiglass, small second hand, damaged dial, leather strap, ca 1944."

Thanks,
Rait

For your first, I'd keep looking. Taking on a project when you don't know much about mechanical vintage is a challenge unless you have lots of time and patience.

@snunez , thanks for input!

The scope of improvements doesn't seem difficult:
* get movement serviced
* get crystal replaced
* inspect dial (unknown followup actions)

2 cents:

Lume on the hands look very strange (I'm not familiar with that reference)

I would stay away from damaged dials

What is the asking price?

Relumed hands, tired dial, tarnished movement. It's important to see the caseback.
Asking price?

The hands are relumed. It´s impossible to asses the dial without better pictures. In all, the watch is correct. The movement is dirty as seen.

Hi Rait
I gather you’re based in Sweden as I’ve also seen this one coming up for auction.

Q1: Given the condition, should I get this particular item or continue searching?
There are certainly better examples out there, but I know that prices in Sweden for these Suverän watches are only going up. Are you able to go and see the watch in person to check it out?

Q2: What is a fair price range for this item to be paid?
These are very sought after in Sweden and I think I would not be willing to go to more than €500 on this particular watch(I know, I’m cheap, but you have many unknowns), although I’ve a feeling it will go beyond this at the auction. The last black faced Suverän I saw (sold on Tradera) went for €2k to a member of this forum, but it was in lovely condition.

Q3: What additional service should I plan for this item?
Service and new glass and personally I would relume the hands to something more appropriate(I believe it’s not the original lume).

All that said, it’s your money and do with it what you want. The hardest thing once you’ve decided to get a vintage watch is to be patient and to only pull the trigger on a decent example.
I wish you all the best if you decide to bid(don’t worry I won’t be bidding against you).

Regards
Biezmez.

Is it only the picture or have the lugs been bent?

Well, the strap does his best to fit...

Looks like top lug is bent. Hands not original. Trashy dial, tired movement

I'd pay about $75.00 for the balance and gears and trash the rest.

Look for something else and in nicer condition

Do not follow Dons advice. This watch will sell for several 100 dollars at auction soon.

US$75.00 is for sure an exaggeration, but the watch is not in good condition and what about the caseback?

How do you manage to asses the dial with that picture (reflexes) and the heavily scratched dial?
Regarding the movement I enclose a picture of a similar "dirty" one. It runs flawlessly and these movements are real work horses. It has also experienced moisture as seen on the picture.
(I have no interest what so ever in the watch we are discussing).

First of all. You assessed the watch as correct when the hands are not correct. They would be silver to match the small second hand

Second - oxidation on the crown wheel shows a possible underlying moisture problem

Third - Lug bent and case has a dull finish which could mean metal fatigue along with pitting behind two of the bottom lugs

Fourth - Seller says dial is damaged

Your watch

Damaged lugs - garbage case

Rust around the outside, in some of the screw holes, on the crown wheel and on the stem

$75.00 as the balance looks good, and some gears

I rebuilt all these movements, so maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about 😀

Just because it says Omega. Doesn't mean it automatically has value. One need to examine the entire watch carefully to avoid falling into a money pit of repairs or worse. A complete waste of money on a non fixable watch

This is just my opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own. If you don't agree with it. Thats your choice and same for others, but I would not buy it. I would wait and look for one in better condition and pay a little more

Moisture - Yes. Worn case - yes. Many of the Suverän watches suffer from heavy use. But it's the dial that is important. I can not asses how damaged it is. (damaged crystal). The radium looks good. I stand corrected about the colour of the hands, though the type is correct. The specific watch will be at auction on March 7. I will be surprised if it don't sell for at least US $400.

Here is an example with a quite damaged dial.

It's an auction. Min asking price is 4750 SEK, or 502.12 USD.
