Buy High - Sell Low

My wife picked up these four watches yesterday. Nicely preserved - despite still having very old batteries.

Bought high? I think so. Eating a Burger King product is punishment enough and feels costly.

Sold low? Less than $20 for all four.

I picked up a couple of these before, but these still have the « boxes and papers ». I kept one separated. Somehow it reminds me of Standy’s avatar.

Should I let my wife sell these in her little vintage booth (among the Louis Vuitton and Gucci bags)? Or should I remove the old batteries and hold on to them for another 25 years? They may sell for $25 in 2050!

Hold on to them and in 25 years the plastic may turn into tar.

Is this a stealth sales post? How many posts do you have sir!? I almost want to buy them for my kids. The Dino eye one is really cool. I’ve been thinking that the small vintage watches are the perfect size for kids. The problem is they destroy everything they touch…

Haha! Not a sales post! You trying to get me banned? If they were for sale my wife would have paid $200!

I agree with you that the Standy one is cool. I think the batteries will likely have ruined them anyway. Check EBay. There must be some for sale.

The purpose of the thread is more to show that the previous owner was holding on to a collection that they probably cherished, and that most collections are likely worth way less than we think.

I think I may have had that Dino eye watch as a kid. It’s very familiar. Kind of percolated up through my subconscious but I remember having something with a hologram dinosaur eye.

Related to collecting. We have a friend who collected Hess trucks for decades. Brand new in the boxes. Eventually they had to go and gave them all to us where my kids played with them and quickly broke many of them. The old plastic is so brittle they don’t hold up well and similar to these watches they were stored with batteries in them for 30 years. Still worked once I cleaned out the corrosion. At least they got a second life and got used. I try to recognize when something is going to sit around for years and then get thrown out and then I expedite the process.

My 5-year-old is obsessed with dinos and would love these! We listened to 2 hours of paleontology podcasts yesterday. At which point, he was like "why is there a t rex in Jurassic world when it's a cretaceous therapod?" I am super jealous about how easy it is to access information versus when I was a kid.

Dang dude. Brings back memories as I was just a kid when these came out.
I still remember them very vividly! Especially the t-rex one that flips open, that was my personal favorite.

Put 'em up for sale! Advertise them as fossils for kids, precipitate a copyright infringement lawsuit/publicity stunt!

I still have my Dino Eye. I do not ever think I opened the box. I also have one from the film Congo. One of my favorites is from a box of Honeycomb cerial. Still in the plastic bag.

not quite the same but for advertising watches nothing beats.
