I don’t care for the idea of trying to limit the use of words or phrases on a public forum. Pointing out those that bother people is okay, and I guess is the true intent of this thread.

The phrase I wince at a bit is “wear it in good health”. I saw it used a lot on WUS and TRF, and I even used it a few times myself but it felt strange and so I quickly stopped using it. I get the sentiment behind it, but think it could be dropped from use and no one would miss it.

x2 on this one. At least it is balanced by 'dibs' (i.e., "put in your will that I get first shot at this when you croak, so your widow knows") 😎

Maybe I watch too many YouTube channels but I'm getting extremely irritated by people referring to watches as 'pieces' and insisting on adding the word 'point' whenever they say 'price'. Why??

I studied economics in University so talking generally about ‘price’ makes me think of a curve that connects many possible prices. When someone adds ‘point’ it clarifies an exact price upon which a decision can be made.

I’ve never sold a watch, but I did recently sell my boat. I listed it at the highest possible fair market value I could justify. I then had a minimum price I would accept. The range between these ‘points’ defined what offers I would entertain.

Grail and beater... while sometimes misused are good specific terms.

Beater- watch I don’t care about being dinged up scratched. Example- my SKX is my daily beater bike riding or working on cars it’s perfect. Taking it out for drinks still works! The more beat up the better. It earned its scars.

Grail- the piece regardless of price you hunted and researched to death. For some a PP Calatrava others the watch they saved years for that spoke to them, others an exceedingly rare piece that took a lot of time to get like a perfect early Navitimer or 6117-8000 Seiko.
The thing that pisses me off the most is the phrase "Does the watch sing to you?"

By comparison with annoying business buzzwords and vexing corporate jargon, the Forum is a breath of fresh air.

Only if it's a repeater. And I'm guessing most of us don't have one of those.

So you find the word 'Price' ambiguous?

These are not cliches. They are figures of speech that constitute a lingo... the patois of the similarly afflicted.

So you find the word 'Price' ambiguous?

am·big·u·ous
amˈbiɡyo͞oəs/
adjective
  1. (of language) open to more than one interpretation; having a double meaning.
    "the question is rather ambiguous"
    • unclear or inexact because a choice between alternatives has not been made.
"this whole society is morally ambiguous"
...talking generally about ‘price’ makes me think of a curve that connects many possible prices.
ambiguous - yes.

I have bought many watches from OF where the seller listed a 'Price', yet the value they stated in their FS listing was very rarely the value I ended up sending them in exchange for the watch. They listed one asking 'price', I had in mind a different 'price' I wanted to pay, in the end a transaction was made if we reached a 'price point' we could both accept. There wasn't a singular 'price' in the mind of the seller, nor in my mind as the buyer, and therefore it was 'ambiguous'. The 'price point' at which we reached agreement was singular and commonly understood.

Price point....

In booze it’s important. You can have a great 60$ bottle of Scotch and a bad 120$ bottle and the 120 is better then the 60....

You have to compare at a price point in certain circumstances.

Sistem 51 vs under $200 Seiko... Similar price point ones way better then the other.

More for your bonfire: serviced (good thing), never serviced (good thing), serviced by experienced watchmaker (questionable)...

I would have to disagree with you but to each our own opinion. Wear yours in good health.

Luckily my favorite ever (c grade) superhero provides the antidote to all of your woes, as per his improvements, listed below

Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, I give you:
Wrist time (what's wrong with "wear"?) ... Shazam time
Pulled the trigger (bought?) Shazammed myself this new shazampiece
Daily beater (watch) Daily Shazam or Shazammer or just Shazza
Grail = ((nice) watch) Ultimate Shazam, mega Shazam or Shazaculate piece

Bonfire quenched!
