·On offer is Bulova's iconic Snorkel Oceanographer 666 "Devil Diver" in the classic G variant, dating to 1970. The Oceanographer, among mid-range divers from the late-60s and early-70s, boasts one of the most unique case and dial combinations. It's an example of excellently integrated design, with each element complementing the others.
The Case: The 41mm diameter c-shaped case is impressive without being overwhelming. Nicely finished, with a fine eye for detail. This one is in overall good condition, with a few small dings and light scratches commonly found in an unpolished watch from this period. It has clearly seen only gentle usage.
The Dial: This is the real highlight here, designed by the famed Singer workshop (who created the Heuer Daytona "Paul Newman" and other iconic pieces). The glossy black dial is gorgeous, with a red crosshair and perimeter, a combination echoed in the bezel. The Oceanographer's unique arrangement of transluscent, round, plexi indices sitting in metal brackets above the lumes is, to my knowledge, unique to the Oceanographer. Chunky, two-tone batons and a steel lollipop sweep second, both with original lume, complete the picture.
The Bezel: The bright two-tone bakelite bezel has an in-built, 15-min. regatta timer in red. It is without cracks or other major blemishes. No fading at all. In true diver style, it clicks unidirectionally.
The Movement: The in-house Bulova 11 BLACD movement was serviced this month (January 2024) and is keeping excellent time. Please note, the pic below is pre-service.
The Crown: Original, signed Bulova crown.
As should be clear, the watch is all original and unpolished, the only exception is that the crystal is likely a replacement, since the original would have typically been a cyclops.
Measurements:
Diameter without crown: 41mm
Length: 43mm
Lug width: 18mm
The watch will come fitted with a vintage steel bracelet, as pictured.
$900 ONO or equivalent in GBP or Euros.
Shipping to US, Canada, UK/Europe by method of buyer's choosing. Other destinations possible, with arrangements tbd.
