So, I have managed to escape New York and make it down to Oz for a well-earned vacation. I will be based in Brisbane for a couple weeks and was wondering if there were any interesting watch shops or resources in the area. Knowing we have a strong Australian membership on this board, I figured it was worth a shot. Prove me right! :D

Welcome to Brisvegas Lex, I don't think there's a lot to offer watch enthusiasts here, you could try Brisbane Vintage Watches
    Shop 12-13 Ground Level
    Brisbane Arcade
    160 Queen Street
    Brisbane Qld 4000

They deal in most used Swiss high end brands, I've never bought from there before, I bought my last Omega from the only AD in town which is located at Hardy Brothers Jewellers also in the CBD.
    Enjoy your stay.

Yeah BVW is Ronnie's shop he's a good bloke who knows his stuff, the Rolex AD is on Queen St too, that's Langfords, the owner Peter is a great guy and they carry a big selection as they're Rolex/Tudor exclusive.

Thanks, gents. I was actually by there before I saw your replies. He had some interesting lives, including a very nice c-case Connie. Seemed a bit pricey to me, but I haven't been keeping up on the market lately.

I've noticed :D If he offers a decent value on the Seamaster 2000 I brought along for the trip, I might be persuaded to dip into my savings for an horological souvenir.

It hasn't always been that way - my first trip there was in 1988, and things seemed quite cheap to me then. If only we had bought the property we were thinking of buying as an investment back then...

    Oh well, it's only money.

Its more overseas goods, like for most watches in the Rolex price range or above new, its cheaper to buy a return ticket to LA and buy it there than it is to buy the same watch locally.

'88 Ironically was the highpoint for the AUD after the float in '83 so that probably was one of the best times for us.

These days even things like my Apple Watch, $1099 USD in the US which should have been ~$1430 AUD, instead it was $1630. Then cars, a current 911 Turbo is 151k USD in the US, its 311K USD here. Even a more affordable BMW 228i is $32,100 USD in the US, and $50,100 USD here.

So even after you factor the exchange rate a 911 turbo is more than twice the price, and a 228i is 65% more expensive to buy locally.

A ikea stool made in Indonesia was $59 in the US and $69 in Sweeden and $149 in Australia and shipping was blamed. Even a ITunes song is nearly twice the price in Australia

I do recall cars being much more expensive there, even on my first visit. And of course gas (petrol) was twice what it was here. In 1988 we were saying a whopping 35 cents per litre, and there it was 70+ (which seems like a massive bargain now).

Over the years though it seems that just about everything has become more expensive there than it is here in Canada. The premium paid seems to be bigger every time we visit. Beer, food, whatever, it all seems to have gotten very expensive there as you guys illustrate.

We sure are getting taken for a ride here on most things, but not as bad as most countries on petrol. This is obviously based on the cheaper regular unleaded which I wouldn't even use in my lawn mower! So for decent fuel count on paying about 18c per litre more.

Isn't there 10% GST in Australia on stuff like this? That would normally be included in your price, So wouldn't that raise the price on the Apple Watch to A$1,575? Not too far off from the A$1,630 you were quoted.

Here in the US, state sales tax is never included. That's because the tax is between 0% and 10.5% depending on where you live. At my house, the sales tax is 7%. I go 1/2 mile north (another county), it's only 6%. Go 25 more miles north it's 6.5%.

Doesn't explain the huge difference in the price of cars, but I suspect that there are other taxes and/or customs duties involved for those imports.

Well that's being fixed now, with the re-introduction of indexation on petrol excise, which is a v. good thing.

Are you interested in selling any of yours? Post it from Brisbane and then I'd defiantly avoid customs charges
