The Apollo 13 story is very famous, and it has even led to problem-solving strategies and processes across different industries. In 2015, I attended a Speedmaster event in Houston, and astronauts Jim Lovell, Tom Stafford, and Eugene Cernan were also present. Jim Lovell, the commander of Apollo 13, told us that day in Houston that […]

Interesting, this answered our question if Apollo 13 crew members Jack Swigert and Fred Haise also received a Gold "Apollo 11 tribute" Speedmaster as their names didn't appear on the original listing !
.

Anyway, Apollo 13 will also be remembered for the first Rolex wrist watch flown to the Moon as Swigert wore his Rolex GMT-master 1675, which ended up in the Rolex museum (October 1970) as he received a Gold GMT-master in return for his spaceflown timepiece.

Love to hear that Rolex are always second best, Omega beat them to the moon and Blancpain beat them to the ocean with the Fifty Fathoms.

Wasn’t Swigart the pilot and did not walk on the moon?

I thought Swigert famously timed the burn with a Speedy?

@BenzBhoy
In fact Jean Jacques Fiechter (Blancpain) & René Paul Jeanneret (Rolex) were both member of the Club Alpin Sous-Marin in Cannes France (1953)
Don't forget Rolex were the first to the deepest point in the Oceans: Challenger Deep in Western Pacific Ocean
January 23, 1960 with a Rolex on the outside of the Bathyscaphe "Trieste" at 11 Km depth in Earth's seabed hydrosphere valley Mariana Trench.

Indeed, Apollo 13 CMP Jack Swigert wore a NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster 105.012-66 (NASA n° 69) over his space suit but also wore his personal Rolex GMT-master Pepsi 1675 pilot watch underneath the space suit. He was the first to wear a Rolex to the Moon, but it was later also done on Apollo 14 ( Mitchell and Roosa wore a GMT-master ) and on Apollo 17 ( Ron Evans carried a GMT-master in his PPK).
April 16, 1970 : Jack Swigert timed the 14 seconds LM DPS burn ( Lunar Module – Descent Propulsion System) using James Lovell’s Speedmaster as they knew it was the most recent serviced chronograph!

When talking about the first modern format dive watches, everyone seems to forget that the Zodiac Sea Wolf also came out in 1953.

That is new to me, Blancpain was first, so does that mean Rolex were 2nd or 3rd?

I mean, it was all in the same year, but I have no idea which actually hit stores first.

Does that mean that the Seawolf came out before the sub as well?

Yes, sub was ‘54
For some reason this makes me happy 😁. I think Zodiac is a hugely underrated brand. I'm probably going to add one to the collection soon. I think the quartz situation was particularly hard on them given the serial killer connotation of the word Zodiac at the time.

Ha Ha, the Rolex owners will be fuming…
Lots of us here who like to poke the bear. And to keep it thread topical, I don’t have a gold Speedmaster but do have a 16750- little brother to Swigert’s

Nice watch, unfortunately Rolex and I parted ways for various reason… latterly stealing the jigsaw puzzle idea. Anyway, this doesn’t effect you, so good health wearing it.

Marketing goes a long way ( read " Selling the Crown " by Brendan Cunningham ) and Rolex never photoshopped any photos, which cannot be said of other brands.
In the end there's no wrong/right nor good/bad as it all depends of personal taste/choice " de gustibus non est disputandum "...
Remember at least 20 Apollo era astronauts owned a Rolex GMT-master pilot watch and 3 astronauts even owned a Zodiac !
(SeaWolf and Aerospace-GMT versions) 😗
