The GMT Master
·Hey all,
I was working at the shop today, and first thing this morning whilst I was hiding in the office (helping with stocktaking, not slacking!😗), a chap comes in and asks for me by name. He'd brought in a vintage Rolex Sub Date the previous week, and me being a nosy bugger, had a look at it. It was a Mk. V Red 1680 - so that got me very excited! I explained just how sought after it was, and he was appreciative of the help - he didn't know what he had! He went on to say he had a couple of other watches lying about at home, a Rolex and an Omega, and whether I would take a look at them to see if they were worth repairing, so he was here on his return visit.
I went out, and started chatting to him, and he got out the Rolex first. Nothing overly exciting, just a mid-60s steel and 14ct Oyster Perpetual. In nice condition, but nothing to particularly write home about. However, the next thing he brought out was a Speedmaster, but not just any Speedmaster. I took one look at it and knew it was something special as it wasn't signed with "Professional". I said to him that I thought he had something pretty special, and whether I could do some research into it. He left it with me for an hour, and, after some frenzied research, I believe I was holding a mid-Sixties pre-Moon, pre-Professional Speedmaster, ref. ST105.003. Quite something! In the end, he left it with us to send it for an estimate with a vintage Omega specialist, and he'll decide where to take things when we get a price. In any case, it was a real treat to be able to handle two rare, rare watches, both from the same guy, who is by no means a collector.
I love my job!
