Big Triangle Seamaster: first and last

Hi all,

just a quick question about the big triangle Seamasters: the 165.024 undoubtly was the first. But would you consider the 2254.50 to be the last in line? Ok I know this is a sacrilege for the true 165.024 afficionados but your opinion is wanted...!

Why not? its got the big triangle, but if the 165.024 aficionados don`t want us, we don`t need them 😉

I must admit: I like both, the first and the last. I wonder if someone knows when the last 2254.50 were produced? Was it when the Planet Ocean 300 was presented? Or did the production overlap?

The 2254 was discontinued in 2006 when the red text coaxial SMP was introduced, though you could still see them for sale in retailers as late as 2008.

Despite the superficial similarities in dial, I don't see the 2254 as a descendant of the 50s-70s SM300 really, more an in house homage. There is little in common (other than the dial design and lug shape maybe). I see it more as an offshoot of the Bond SMP so a new category of product to the SM300. The dial is attractive and it seems a shame they discontinued it for sure.

Ok that is very precise: mine is from 2006 also so a very late specimen. I never liked the regular dial plus the open frame hands, but it seems it is the other way round to the general taste because of the success of the standard configuration...

A shame in indeed that they never launched a big triangle since then!
