    Hi all,

    I’m considering taking some of my savings and moving it into a watch to diversify a bit. Since the funds are coming from an individual investing account I need to make sure I make a good choice. Is a better investment a no date sub or other steel Rolex OR a limited edition speedy? Any other ideas are welcome too

    i actually hear investing in outdoor furniture is the new thing. starting to liquidate watches to make room for the resurgence of wicker.

    @kappy94

    We are being a tad snarky because this gets asked a lot by new members. There is no real investment on new pieces with any assured return. Vintage pieces are riding high right now but that doesn’t mean they will in 5 years. There are some shorter midterm plays to be made if you do your homework and hunt for good buys. But that is hard won knowledge not likely to be shared with someone who has not contributed thier knowledge.

    Limited editions are fickle, the Snoopy is doing great, the Speedy Tuesday’s not so much. Heck even arguably one of the most uncommon 145.022 sub variants carries zero extra value, while other sub variations carry extra value. 220 misprint vs straight writing in side the same sub reference.

    Rolex are Rolex you pay more for them vs a comparable Omega for the promise of stronger resale( not a much different % difference though) But new ones will still depreciate in the mid term, and most likely in the long. Luminova does not age as nicely as tritium and the pre 99 pieces will always be worth more then newer ones.

    I don’t really understand the sarcastic comments... a no date sub has only increased steadily in value for decades.

    I don’t really care if it goes up in value I just want to be able to liquidate in case of emergency without taking a hit.

    Not to mention a Daytona is worth $10,000 more the day after you buy it. There’s plenty of watches that have high resale value. All I want is one that will never lose a dime.

    Well, that watch does not exist... In a global financial crisis even the most hyped Rolex will probably be hard to liquidate without a loss

    If you cannot take a hit, it might be better not to buy.

    So why are you asking us? If you want to buy a watch then buy what your website tells you to.

    99.9% of people here are buying for the fun of the hobby and not as an investment

    I’m simply pointing out a false statement. I happen to know that comment to be incorrect. You can sell a Daytona for double the day after you buy it, a Hulk for $4000 more among others, so I know that some watches can be good investments.

    Buy and hold may not be the best strategy, and stocks as well as vintage watches. Just ask guys, like me, who are holding a lot of Heuer watches since the “correction.”
