Best place to sell, NYC?

I purchased a seamaster on here about four years ago and I just don't wear it enough, so I'd like to sell it.

Can anyone recommend a good place in NYC to take it and have it appraised / sell it? Thanks!

Appraisals are pretty much useless as far as retail values go so I wouldn't waste my time/money with that. Selling to a dealer will bring substantially less typically than an open (no reserve) auction on eBay.

Yeah just sell it on eBay. Take good photos and write a decent listing.

With all the ebay scammer threads lately I would advise against using ebay, but that's me.

Sell it here or you might try Crown and Caliber. They will take a commission of course. Take it to a dealer and prepare to be insulted.

Dealer, less than 50% retail. Probably about 35%. If you don’t mind that, bend over and smile

I believe Ebay will typically give you about market price (less the exorbitant 10% fee and 4% PayPal fee). Just make sure to take decent photos

You can find a host of information re selling on eBay in the OF archives. I STRONGLY suggest you research that. I've been on eBay 21years. It can be very successful, but there is also a lot to consider.

I’d try in this order: forums, Reddit, eBay, grey dealers (Takuya, DavidSW, etc), Craigslist, and then brick & mortar store. Since you bought it here, I’d start here and list who you bought it from and see if they can vouch for the watch and you.

With only 20 posts in 4 years, it may be a while before the OP can sell on OF.

Hi guys!

I am new to the OF! I had no idea one could buy/sell in Reddit. Do others have experience with that site?

Thanks,
Cheers to my first post in OF 😀

Another vote for Crown and Caliber. They have a good reputation for fair dealing.

Watch sales on Reddit are on r/Watchexchange. It's a caveat emptor / caveat venditor place, like any other open Internet marketplace -- it's on you to vet the seller, confirm they actually have the watch, arrange the transaction, etc. etc. No more of a problem with fraud than most other marketplaces, as far as I can tell. Seller reviews are on r/WatchExchangeFeedback.

The reason I recommend eBay as a place to sell for people who don't sell often:
  1. Auctions provide decent price discovery if you don't know what your item is worth. Provided you write a decent ad and take OK photos, if there's enough people out there who are interested in what you want, you'll get a decent price.
  2. Decent protections. eBay's protections may be more buyer-focused than seller-focused, but they're a better than you'll get with an unmoderated transaction.
  3. The existence of buyer protections reduces the risk of buying from low-reputation sellers, increasing your market and improving your price. A lot more people will buy from a low-reputation eBay seller than will wire money to a low-reputation forum seller.
  4. Lots of buyers on eBay, global reach.

You can't post it here for sale yet but that doesn't mean you can't trade it for something you like and would wear. Lots of sellers here would consider trades.
