Everyone needs a beater: working on the car, going for a swim, a bit of exercise... I've got a couple: a Seiko SKX011 and one of Eddie's Smiths recreations, both excellent watches.
    SKX011 wristshot.JPG

Smiths Crop.JPG But here's the thing. I only wear them for a couple of hours every other day or so, and its barely worth the hassle of winding and resetting them.

    So I got this:

A quartz G-Shock GWN-1000B, and I couldn't be happier. Just wondering if anyone else had been driven over to the dark side in the search for a beater?

Same approach as well... I picked up the same Gulfmaster as you have originally, but switched to the Rangeman as I decided I wanted a digital display instead.

Sinn UX. No problem getting it wet, and don't need to wind since it is a quartz.

I quit wearing a utility watch when I started carrying a cell phone. I know exactly what time it is, have a timer, an alarm, day and date; I wore nothing on my wrist for years.

Then I started researching this old watch I have and fell in love with clockworks.

I bought a new Hamilton with a basic ETA movement as a daily watch. It was cool to me because I could look at the movement through the display back. I started buying old watches but I kept wearing the Hammie as a daily beater. I found I really liked chronographs. So I found a Hamilton I wouldn't mind getting dinged. I also bought some Seiko 5 watches and a inexpensive Omega for variety.

    Here are my beaters:

Middle one is my beater, couldn't ask for better in that role its simply brilliant and the PVD coating seems almost indestructible, still not one single scratch after nearly 2 years of bashing it into door jams, desks and laptops.

introducing my thirty-one year old Seiko! battle tested, a multiple-deployments survivor, has jumped from perfectly flying planes, changed engine oil, worked on the yard and more...and still accurately ticking!

I wear my skx a lot. Throw it on a nylon NATO if I'm going to be sweating or near water. It's the only watch I keep on a winder.

Two beaters I have are Zodiac and Seiko.Sometimes it is really aggravating to set date and time for few hours of the wrist time, but it's all good.

This is my beater. It was my grandfathers and I know he would wear during any project or task letting it get banged and dinged along the way. To baby it would be doing him and the watch a disservice. I'm simply adding the next generation of dings and scratches

I manage to do even my basic chores with something meaningful and vintage...

78 USMC issued Hamilton (picked up at high double digits :D) ...
joking aside: 33mm of awsome watch that really can take a beating ... and I dont know what they did to the case, but it looks like new

well some of us "beat" in more style than others ... :whistling:

Great thread... without this I wouldn't have just spotted my Suunto battery has died since Christmas  And interesting to see that there are English Peak District bouldering routes named after OF members @Modest_Proposal

So I'll have to dig my old Zenith out. Hasn't seen the light of day for almost two years. Still running... you bet, and only out by a couple of minutes !

I don't wear it in truly tough situations, but my 220 kind of fits that role simply by dint of it being beaten up already - it looks like it survived a shark attack!

    IMG_2242.JPG

Still lots of fun to wear in casual situations :)
