I'm curious to see what treatment the 12 o'clock lume pips receive. They look recessed and possibly encapsulated.

PVD is a process, not a material. It's physical vapor deposition, and it's used to put a thin coat of (supposedly) protective hard material over a base metal.

The better the coating material and the thicker the layer, the longer it lasts without wearing off.
