Did you purchase this watch or was it inherited?

Most automatic watches can also be wound manually.

How have you been a member for 3 years, with over 300 posts, and you don't know this?

You can wear a vintage Seiko diver and shake it only, it is real Automatic.

It doesn't even need to be vintage. There are much more recent models that won't wind to start.

You can shift an automatic transmission, and it's still an automatic. :)

No I don't know what is automatic about a watch you manually wind.

A mechanical, automatic watch that won’t wind itself just sitting on your dresser? That needs to be looked into, for sure. I have a lot of automatics that don’t run unless I wear them. Might be a clue!

You can manually wind it. But it is also automatic, so you don't have to. You might however want to give it several winds to start it off if you haven't worn it for some time. There you go.

While automatics have a weight inside to wind the watch, most modern watches also allow for winding of a watch.

There are many reasons why this is desired. It frustrates me on my SKX and vintage seiko that I can set them in the morning after sitting for a few days and I cannot wind them. So if I don’t wear the watch to wind it long enough and take it off to type it will not get a long enough charge to still be running the next morning. Cost savings was not the only reason that seiko did this for years. They felt the magic lever system and lack of need for any manual intervention other then setting it occasionally was more desirable.
