Hi All, I was pointed here by the reddit r/watches sub and figured I’d give it a shot. I was trying to authenticate a Speedmaster and, admittedly, have little knowledge. Here’s my post and I’d greatly appreciate any input you have!

Hello! I think I may know the answer but wanted to ask the group. Does this appear to be authentic?

My concerns are 1) absence of “Professional” from dial while having the moon watch case-back. I realize there are pre-professional Speedmasters that don’t have “professional” on the dial but I’m under the impression that pre-professional speedy’s are also pre-Moon and should have a different back. 2) lack of lume on the dial (unless this is a variant of some sort). 3) the minute hand seems short - I believe it should extend further out. 4) sub dial spacing - they appear recessed (which is good) but the spacing seems awfully close. Of course I could be wrong about any / all of these.

I’m only going off these 2 pics though I’m sure I can get more. I appreciate any input / guidance from the sub, thanks!

Dial is fake (or a bad refinish).
Hour/minute hands look like they are from a 176.0012 MK 4.5
Everything else looks right for an early-mid 70's 145.022

Need pictures of the movement to see what's going on under the hood.

The spacing of the sub dials is a dead giveaway.

    Need to see inside

The dial is at best a bad redial. The hands at best are from another model.

Caseback spacing is wrong. “First” is never centered on the Omega symbol. Among other spaceing issues with the sea monster.

    Things are not looking up.

Oddly looks like a legit DNN.

Re OP observations... pre professionals used a 321 movement and did not have shoulders around the pushers. The 321 dial and 861 dials are not swappable as they use different dial feet.

I think the caseback is fine. First isn't quite centered - going out from the Omega symbol it is right over the S, which is the same as my -76 caseback. The dial is a POS though. As everyone else has said, it needs to be opened.

Based on the serial number, it could be a 145.022-76 or 145.022-78.

The DNN bezel is nice. What's the asking price? It would have to be really low to justify the hands and dial.

Asking is $2100 but I’m nowhere near that from an offer standpoint based on everything. Thanks for the info.

So assume it’s a -76 that needs a dial, hands, and a service.... if it pre September 77 then it needs the rare dial... -74 early -76 small font differences on the “Speedmaster “

Good news is late-76 and -78 had the same dial which is somewhat common. The hands are any tritium hands... dial ran through early 80’s.

So assume 1k -1.2k to make it right and get it serviced if you hunt the correct dial and hands...

End value about 2.8-3.2k? I can’t read the serial to run it but looks like a 39milllion.

Serial looks like 39,926,880. ILMS gives May 1978 as date.
