Authenticating old omega seamaster 1960 and tips?

This movement and ref number seems to indicate it’s part of the deville family? But it only says seamaster.

Do you think I can do better, finding a better one with a cleaner dial? Overall the watch looks original, with signs of rotor rub.

There is always better but it depends on how much you are willing to spend. The patina on the dial doesn't bother me but the movement has to be looked at to see if it's due for service. If the rotor is still rubbing then that means right away.

950usd

Not a bad price for an 18k automatic SM or SMDV in decent condition overall. The case is pretty good IMO. You just need to decide if you will be happy with the condition of the dial (and sweep hand) in the long run, or if you'd prefer to pay up for a cleaner example.

With the extent of the rotor scraping the inside of the case back, I'll just point out that this is very often a sign of a watch that has been neglected. This can result in the watch needing a lot of parts replaced, so take that into consideration, as this will need a thorough service.

Cheers, Al

Surely worth double that simply for the gold content?

I very much doubt the gold case weighs all that much. My guess is probably value for scrap is less than half the $950 sales price.

$950 buys you around 20-25gr of 18ct gold. How much does one of these weigh? One of these would be at least +50% more expensive in these parts, even considering the dial damage.

Shockingly little once stripped down to the empty case.

Some googling seems to indicate that it's approx. 13gr... That's around half of what the caseback alone on my gold Certina DS weighs 😵‍💫

Yes although it's been a long time since we scrapped a water flooded solid gold deville in the Philippines I recall being disappointed with the weight.

Yes I agree being a reasonably popular model Omega and even with possibly needing a service (jf the rotor rubbing hasn't already been fixed) it wouldn't be out of line to list it for $1400+. From what I read online lately these deville style seamasters are gaining in popularity and solid gold is a big plus no?

Yep. In my experience new enthusiasts seem to gravitate to them like no other vintage Omega.

agree, good starter watches, but they wear small at about 34mm in diameter

I'd disagree about wearing small. They nicely compare and have bigger presence on the wrist than a C shape or some 35-36 modern equivs.

If they fixed it, you have expected them to clean up the loose material generated by it, so it's unlikely that it has been fixed IMO. If it was, the level of work was pretty poor...
