Malcolm Scott Carpenter sat in the top 3 of wrist watch aficionado NASA astronauts as he wore at least
10 different wrist watches:
During the years 1959 & 1960, he was often photographed wearing a small round watch, which was soon followed by the
Bulova and
Accutron tuning fork pilot watches which were issued to all "Mercury 7" astronauts and the NASA test pilots of the hypersonic X-15 research program.
For his May 1962 MA-7 "Aurora 7" spaceflight mission, Carpenter had commissioned a custom 24 hours dial
Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute chronograph which got water damaged during splash-down & recovery in the Caribbean Sea. Six months later Carpenter wore a replacement, this time a Breitling Navitimer, still an all black dial version.
In 1963, Carpenter requested leave-of-abscence from NASA and between June 26, 1964 and September 17, 1964 he participated in the US navy SeaLab I program for experimental underwater habitats. During this period Carpenter wore
Rolex Submariner diving toolwatches.
After 10 months at NASA, Carpenter returned to the SeaLab II program as an Aquanaut and set a record 30 days living in the underwater habitat at the La Jolla canyon at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego... again wearing Rolex Submariner watches. While at the bottom of the Ocean, Carpenter had radio contact with Leroy Gordo Cooper, orbiting the Earth onboard the Gemini V spacecraft!
In 1966, Carpenter was often photographed during all kinds of award ceremonies and he mostly wore the all black dial Breitling Navitimer again.
In August 1967, Carpenter resigned from NASA and by July 1969 left the US Navy with the rank of Commander. His official portrait shows him wearing a Rolex Submariner. At that time he published several books, among which "Inner Space" about his SeaLab experience.
In the 1980, we see he often wore a square quartz wrist watch, which was probably the Gold/stainless steel
Omega quartz chronometer.
In later life, Carpenter was often photographed wearing his Gold Omega "Apollo 11 tribute" Speedmaster chronograph, even on his trichogramma wasp breeding farm in California. Carpenter passed away in October 2018, aged 88.
