I'm considering purchase of this watch. While I've bought several dozen Speedmaster's in the last 10 years, I have little experience with '74 and later examples.

Am told watch was recently serviced and will ask for receipt/record to confirm.

Serial # is 27 mil range, which dates movement earlier to 1968...could it have come from Omega this way or put together earlier movement in later case????

Please examine pictures and give me your critical assessment with opinion on value.

I guess you are on a smartphone?
So here is the trick when you post picture from iPhone when the picture comes from a screenshot (png).
Send the screenshot through email to yourself , then save the picture attached on your smartphone.. and post this one ..it will work (jpg converted)

Probably a donor 861 movement as the serial number is way too early for a 74. My 69 Speedy has a 29,xxx,xxx serial.

Yeah, I highly doubt an 861 that old would have sat on the shelf for 5+ years. The rest of the watch looks OK, but I would look to buy only at a serious discount - parts value pretty much

Would appreciate others chiming in! Specifically, what you think is fair value in USD$? I'm thinking around $2,800 for head since it's been serviced and $300-400 for 1171 bracelet.

I'd appreciate other opinions about the earlier movement serial #...I'm not sure it would be unheard of in a '74 case...don't know how long movements set on shelf or when the '74 case orders began production?

2800$ would be a fair price I think for the whole package as is. If the movement was replaced what else was replaced would be my concern. Either way it's considered a franken.
That's not a bad term, it's just put together.

Important to note that a proper movement will be very hard to find, as the -74 has a wide range of serials. I've seen 32x all the way to 39x.

I can't possibly see how this is worth $3200 given that it's at best had a movement transplant and at worst it a complete franken. Either way, the dial and bezel are average.

    2. Much better to overpay for a good example than underpay for a poor example (Apologies but I can't remember the authors of this one).

Two of the best pieces of advice I've seen on this forum.

It's ways out of the documented range, but an Extract would clear any doubts.

That is weird though, I'm looking to list my Speedy from 1975 soon enough (145022-74) as well, it has a 29 mill serial (dating it to 1969). The thing is that I bought it from the original owner, I have the paperwork from 1975 and he assured me it was the way he got it from an Omega AD (there are his name plus the serial on the 1975 warranty). I'm sure about his story, and paperwork prove it. What do you guys think? I assumed the watch was cased by Omega with an older movement since 1969s have been produced a lot (plus why put in a more valuable movement ?)
    Thanks !!

You, and the OP watch, need extracts from Omega.

It'd be great if you post some pictures of the paperwork.

Agree that we need Extracts all around. I wonder if these could also be examples of the much rumored tendency of some watchmakers back in the day to simply screw on whichever caseback happened to be nearest once the servicing was complete.

Mine is a 74 because it was bought new in 75 and the (original) dial is not stepped... but I guess it would be cool to know how watchmakers behaved back then!
My guess is that in the 70s/60s there wasn't really a vintage watch market, and 99% of the people couldn't care less about stepped dials, 633 endlinks or whatever. Plus without the technology we have today it must have been hard to learn stuff about these timepieces...

74 with a 31x serial number checking in here. Mine is actually a couple of hundred units lower than the bottom end of the range that MWO (1st Edition) lists as having been seen for this reference. If an extract were to confirm 27x for the 74, that would be quite something!

Definately overpriced. The bracelet is original and correct for the reference and period of time, but the links closest to the lugs seems to be 'twisted'. The lume on the hour hand has fallen off. The tritium on hour markers has turned black - fungus? Water damage? Combined with the serial number issue it is for sure a 'no go' for me.

My lume is dark as well, and has aged this way because the dial Was stored separately from the watch. It is good to look out for people, but gunning down other ads while you don't have all the details can be misleading for the guy on the other side ;)

you are perfectly right - I can only base my judgement on the pics provided and thats what I have done. If anyone find the watch attractive they are free to buy it, though I wouldn't.[emoji6]
