Hi All

Very quick question

Are the Rubber / Croc Omega straps waterproof
the ones where bottom is rubber and top half is croc stitched on

i.e. is the leather top faux or synthetic ?

21mm fits 43.5 PO etc

Part number : RUZ005702

came as a package but don't want to fit / use unless 100% sure its water resistant

this one

I believe the top is rubber that is embossed to look like gator/croc. If you have the strap in hand it should be obvious if it is real leather or not.

Thanks I am sure it is synthetic so waterproof - but amazingly realistic to real leather I am guessing it is similar to 'swimskin' product by Rubber B ??

I have no idea how Omega OEM straps are made, but I have used high end strap makers on a couple occasions for custom strap projects, and what I know is that those strap makers offer rubber on the bottom face of a strap as an option designed to prevent sweat damage and wear on a high end leather strap.
So unless you can verify directly with an Omega retailer, I would assume the top is crocodile leather and the bottom is rubber. And I would not assume water resistance, unless clearly specified that the top part has been treated somehow, or that it is rubber.

To my (relatively educated) eye, both straps posted above look like real crocodile or alligator leather— even though the second one is specifically mentioned as a rubber look alike— so any assumption otherwise would be risky.

However… perhaps it’s possible to search that strap reference on the web?

I'd say they are more sweatproof than waterproof. I wouldn't swim with it.

According to Omega, the top is actual leather. I cannot for the life of me understand the point of a strap like this on a Planet Ocean.

Omega just being realistic and acknowledging how many people buy these watches as desk divers lol.

Oh I know that 99% of us are never going to go beyond the pool or splashing around off the side of a boat, but to put a deep sea dive watch on a strap you can't even swim with??? It just makes no sense. At least give customers the option of a fully rubber strap for their PO.

POs are offered in a dizzying number of possible combos between size, case material, dial color, strap, etc. There are plenty of options with rubber strap available.

I also wouldnt be surprised if this is some kinda treated leather that can withstand some splashing in a pool, but I don't own one of these straps myself so I cant confirm. My PO is on rubber.

Given their habitat, I would think there's a very good chance that croc is waterproof.

Yeah, I know but I thought I bring some levity to this extremely serious topic. It is not waterproof, by the way.

I believe it is waterproof to 50 meters, but if you move your arm while in the water (like in a swimming motion, for instance) the dynamic pressure will make it leak.

@Nauti it is NOT waterproof; was just at the Omega Boutique in Zurich and went through ALL the PO straps in detail with the team there including the watchmaker and they were very clear that bottom rubber is to make it a sweatproof leather band, but the top is leather and not waterproof.

For this reason, in addition to the bracelet & NATOs, I also bought a fully rubber strap.

In short, if you want a waterproof sports strap with your PO, you have to buy it extra the leather is not waterproof (i.e., don't submerge it or use it in the shower) and the bracelet obviously scratches.

The black version of the this strap that's on the Planet Ocean GMT looks amazing IMO, even if it's not waterproof.
