Are ponies just small horses?

I grew up a horse person (not part human part horse) mostly with quarter horses,
So, I guess a quarter horse is even smaller than a pony...?

Is there a half horse? Or is that just a pony...?

If we are all just kids at heart, maybe horses are really just tall ponies

Quarter horses were bred for explosive speed over short distances...as in the QUARTER mile. ::facepalm1::. Interestingly, Everyone I knew who owned quarter horses (including my family) spent all their time trying to get them to move slowly.

AI says ponies are less than 14.2 hands. About the height of Tom Cruise sans lifts.

"He's a one trick pony
One trick is all that horse can do
he does one trick only"

The main thing is: horse doesn't rhyme with only. Ask Paul.

That is probably true. I grew up a horse person (not part human part horse) mostly with quarter horses, and when learning to ride, the little kids always started on ponies. Interestingly, ponies are some of the most cantankerous, knot-headed animials I've ever seen, and they were often not cooperative. I think I'd been thrown by three or four ponies by age 5. The good news: it was a short trip to the ground.
I’m far from an expert but these few ponies I interact with are much more intelligent and friendly than I expected. One of them makes that hee haw noise when I head over to him. They like to be patted and talked to. The horses on the other hand will only act like my bff when I have apples or feed.

I always pictured ponies as cantankerous but am finding the opposite. Again this is very anecdotal as it’s just one farm and a relatively small group of animals I have not been doing this all my life.

Well that's a strange thread to post, but when I was a little boy in Poland, we all had ponies. My sister had pony, my cousin had pony,. My pony was the pride of Kraków.

Can anyone tell me how much my grandfather’s watch is worth?

Gotta be worth a pony at least maybe even a monkey, but don't trade it for a Stone Pony unless it's a first pressing of course.

Funny i was sitting outside reading this post. The road in front of my house connects with 4-5 farms so I often see horses being exercised rode by.
This one apparently was not used to the few cars going by and started trying to get the rider on his back off so he could take off. I’ve been on out of control horses and tbh I find a soft spot to ditch if he is really going wild.
This rider was a pro, snapped a whip got the horse a little more obedient. I saw the horse had ropes around his leg preventing him from breaking into full stride so I walked out and played traffic cop for the 3-4 cars that were going by.

Beautiful beast all lean and muscle but I would have been scared to death on top of him as he took those movements to get me off.

By the way I just got educated about the difference between ponies and donkeys by the farm owner. My buddy is a donkey not a pony. I have a lot to learn.

This thread has been much more enjoyable than more Simon Freese horror stories.

Are we even dragging in centaurs and not talk about the noble Equs mulus? The humble mule is ironically the "work-horse" of many societys.

The mule that I rode in the Andes carried people and supplies to an isolated village. They walked for several hours round trip each day. One of the mule drivers rode a horse that went one one trip a week and needed rest and watering while the mules just kept on working. Its like a race car compared to a good ol pick-up truck / ute / Volvo.

The young mule colts liked to race each other and when a mule in front of another took a dump, the one behind sprinted up besides so that the riders knee were forced in to the shit. I rode a mare who did none of those shenanigans. She was the queen that kept the other in place and were easily controlled with the sounds I had heard in westerns. Clicks to make her go faster and "whoa" and purrs to slow her down.
The little ones are just too cute!
