I just ordered some one-millimeter Ruby ball bearings from these guys.. and I'm now doubting if I bought the right size for my recently purchased 1966 Seamaster 300?
That is to say, should the balls rest loosely on top of the springs inside the recesses or should they be a bit more recessed a bit like a roll-on deodorant?
BTW all springs are in situ, but no balls whatsoever, so it's not clicking at the moment..
might it also be advisable to change the springs?

Actually, now that you mention it: I once read a very funny story about Burt Ward, who played Robin in the very popular TV series from the 1960’s, “Batman.”

Apparently, at the height of his fame, he came down with a case of mumps, which is often mild in childhood, but more serious in adults. He contracted the dreaded mumps orchitis, which causes massive swelling of one testicle.

So he relays the story of holding this massive ball in his hand, waddling in to a crowded doctor’s waiting room, where of course everyone recognized him immediately.

Not a urologist by trade but yes, balls should always be loose and flowing freely. Unencumbered is The Way.
As to "on top"... that is more of a discretionary quandary left to the partner.

The Omega part number for these is 099ST0029, just so people know.

I just opened one up and measured the ruby - it was 0.99 mm...

Changing the springs is not a bad idea - part number for those is 085ST0030.

Wow .. That's great.. thank you.. so I'm guessing one millimeter should just about work?
How proudly should they sit before re-seating the bezel? Should they look a bit like a roller ball roll-on deodorant? Or should they be a bit more proud? I used a tiny steel ball bearing to test and mine seem to be sitting fairly proud, that is to say, more protruding than a roll-on deodorant👎

I am glad you didn't order the sapphire option.
Isn't sapphire about the same as ruby in terms of hardness?

The balls should be captive, so when the bezel is removed, they don’t just roll off the case. So more like a roller deodorant...

Thank you, that's very interesting, my ones seem to be sitting a little proud then.. Normally when springs atrophy they lose their height. I didn't actually remove the springs when I cleaned, I just flushed out the recesses.. Should the springs be loose and readily pop out or do they require some special coaxing?
