AR Coating Scratches on Seamaster

Personally, I prefer it on both sides, as do many others. When it works, it works very well, and the crystal just disappears.

Since the outer AR coating can be removed easily in a few minutes, those who don't want it can remove it if they so choose, and crystals don't have to be replaced.

How can we remove it? Does it void warranty? Do I need a dremmel drill or can I do it by hand with diamond paste? How can I safely do it on my watch?

Highly doubt it would impact warranty. I used Autosol (Diamond Paste should be better) with a microfibre cloth and it came off quickly and easily. Most comes off in the first minute or so and then another few to make sure.

Archer what is your experience with AR coating?

Just make sure that you tape the bezel to protect it before you proceed to remove the AR coating. I’m still at a loss to understand how some owners are picking up these scratches on the AR coating as it’s really pretty durable. I’ve been wearing my 2017 SMPc most days since I purchased it new and the AR coating is still pristine.

I will leave alone unless I get a scratch.

A similar thing happened shortly after i got my seamaster diver in 2016, i believe there was talk of a bad batch of outer applied coating, sent mine in under warranty , new crystal was put in, been fine since.

Mine is ok, just in case that's all. Mine is a dress watch so not going any place near the sea or swimming pool

Love your dial. I wish they stuck with this dial.

Thanks. I bought mine just when the new 2018 version had come out and the prior generation was still available. I went with the older model after comparing the two. Although the new model is technologically superior, the older model is a bit smaller at 41 mm, thinner, has the applied logo, no wave high gloss dial (which I think is really attractive) and the beautiful large hippocampus engraving on the case back instead of the display case back on the new model. It also has the coaxial caliber 2500D which is a proven, reliable, accurate workhorse of a movement. The prior version was also substantially less expensive than the new version. In many ways, I think that it was the pinnacle of the design evolution of the SMP. The new version is a great watch, but I find it to be too large and too blingy for my taste.

The gloss dial is nice like PO. Waves are ok but I wish they made them much smaller

I saw this video and immediately checked my seamster 300m. I don't find any scratches and I've had it for 18 months. So maybe it was just his.
Nope I have heard lots of people with AR coating getting it scratched. I have a speedmaster with AR coating only on the inside. That's where it should only be. If one of the benefits of sapphire crystal is it's scratch resistant nature, why put a scratch able coating over it. Oh I know, it makes the watch more amazing in the showroom.

I can't understand why any watch manufacturer would put AR coating on the outside, especially if it's on the inside.
Because it makes it more anti reflective and that makes them look amazing in the show case. Once you by the watch the anti reflective coating on the outside did it's job.

Nope.
AR should be on both sides. It looks so much better when you compare. You buy the watch and you buy clarity of the dial.
AR is scratch resistant enough and it's not that visible when you scratch, so please do not dramatise things.
I have 10 years old watches and I know what I am talking about.

Exactly! You're right.
To be honest, when I see 10 years old watches (oh, I scratched the AR) and you compare mine for example I have got no idea what people do to watches it looks like their coordination below any level.

If it has no downside why doesn't AP, Patek, Rolex or VC use it do it?

It has downside as everything in this life.
I have no idea why these companies don't use AR on both sides.
what I am saying that you get more benefits with AR - it’s like you look in a clean clear lake in Switzerland vs your lake in your village , which is clean enough but not tothat level (just to get an idea)
You have to compare side to side to get an idea

Because a lack of AR makes for a much shinier and eye-catching crystal, literally. Same reason Rolex typically uses flat crystals. They reflect more light in a "flash" than any curved sapphire does.

Ha, you must have posted this right as I was editing my post to add it. 😁 flat crystals reflect the light away in a single direction which means they look flashier. One of the advantages to a domed crystal is how many directions it's able to reflect right away so you don't get the flash effect.

Unless you want it, of course.
