Why have they put a wall clock on a strap?

Actually... I may know the purpose of this watch.

When my Dad's eyesight started to degrade when watching TV, everyone in the family told him he needed to get glasses.

He decided to get a bigger TV

It's a manual winding Cal. 2211, which is a reworked version of the ETA 6498-2 movement.

Thanks, this explains the bigger than normal size 😀

They could just make it an honest pocket watch...

Does this imply something dishonest about this wrist watch?

Lots of manufacturers use this movement in wrist watches...even me.

Lol!! No, it doesn’t. It’s just an expression. I was just thinking that it may look good as a straight up pocket watch. ( hoping “straight up” is a more clear expression.)

Not necessarily.
Smaller movements are also fitted to larger cases.
It's actually common for eta 6498 movements to be fitted into 42 mm cases or slightly smaller cases.
Just because a pocket watch is associated with a larger package doesn't mean it has to flow into wristwatch packaging.
Omega seems to like to fit it into a larger wristwatch case for some reason, which is probably more aligned with commercial priorities.
The last time I recall Omega doing it was in the XXL Railmasters from the early to mid 2000's and I think it was the same size case.

I’ve briefly had the steel AT XXL on my wrist before getting it serviced for a friend and it is actually a surprisingly nice watch to wear. It sits quite flat and while it’s big it doesn’t feel as big as many Panerais due to the decreased height. I have a big beefy Shrek wrist and it didn’t look excessive at all.

These movements are regularly pout into 42 mm cases, and the smallest I've seen is probably 41. The movement is 36 mm, so going much smaller than 41 won't leave much wall thickness on a case.
