somebody did 10 spots with a pelican 1170. which has an Interior: 10.5" × 6" × 3.2"

the interior of the apache is 14-7/8 in. x 10-5/8 in. x 6-1/8 in

i don't know if i want the watches that close to one another. this person didn't even line it up correctly for 2 rows as well. the unevenness tilts me to no end.

here is a 1470 pelican which is almost the same

(L) 15.62" x (W) 10.43" x (D) 3.75"

pretty sure the measurements on depth do not take in account for the hard foam that some of the cases have and the p&p foam sits on

nalpak is selling jus the foam pre-cut for $129

(this seems like a lazer cut of a harder foam as well)

this looks like the minor league of pick & pluck foam.

1 row border on the side and in between watches is not good

still beats getting them out of your dresser drawer.

nanuk case 910

this looks like pick/pluck foam that's been machine cut.

this looks like 6/4 or 7/4.

each watch sits low within the cavity and it looks like there is extra room

took the foam out of the apache.

turns out they have 4 pieces of foam in the case

top- egg crate
bottom 1 -pick/pluck
bottom 2 -pick/pluck
bottom 3 -just foam

now to find a program so i can print it a grid

23 squares length
16 squares width

looks like the border is slightly bigger than 1 square around the foam

total of 368 pick/pluck squares

since the border size is practically 1 square i'm going to have to take away some size and build up the perimeter to have 2 square around the whole piece of foam

new total square size is

21Lx14W

or

294 total pick and pluck squares

new problems just eyeballing/counting foam it without even consulting grid yet.

if i have a 2 square border around the perimeter and each watch i'm only getting 8 watches with even more room to spare with (squares not accounted for) and the leftover than only the original 2 square perimeter

might have to go to a 1 square buffer in between the watches

good news about this almost 6+" depth case and foam is that i could do 2 levels of watches with 8 on each level with spots for tools/bands/bracelets

yes,..i'm the omega guinea pig for the apache watch case.

first off.

this case is completely overengineered to hold watches.. these cases were made for weapons, cameras, etc

if i packed the watches well and they don't come out of it's spot, i could throw it off a cliff and everything would be fine.

i have 2 grid patterns that can work.

one with 15 watches
one with 8 watches

the grid with 15 watches only contain 1 square in between except on the whole perimeter. the sides even get an extra square protection

the grid with 8 watches contains some dead space. it is protected by 2 squares in between and 3 squares top/bottom. not to mention 3 in the middle intersection

worn wound article has a 7/4 pattern

https://wornandwound.com/diy-pelican-watch-case/

7x4 bay for each watch..the 4 width looks like 3 to me. mistake?

PELICAN_CASE_OPEN2.jpg

if i keep it like i have it it will be pretty snug and fit tightly among other things

this looks exactly like the apache, but it's from the case farm

this holder pattern looks like 6/5 or 7/4 for each watch

7/4 and 6/4 pattern...also 5/4

i can always go to 7/4 if needed from 6/4 and/or 5/4..so i can start out 5/4

7/4 seems to take away way too much foam

so my options are

the first two numbers will be he amount of squares removed for each watch

4/3 - 8 watches
4/3 - 15 watches
5/3 - 8 watches
5/3 - 10 watches
5/4 - 8 watches
6/4 - 8 watches

7/4 - 8 watches

seems like the 4 square width is universal. but i wonder if going to 3 might be better because the watch will be wrapped around this foam which isn't that strong and is quite malleable. unlike the hard watch type holder/pillow from many watch boxes

the 3 square option will likely keep the watch sitting high in the hole and not as deep as well. i don't know which option will be the best

one thing i didn't consider is if each pick and pluck square is a universal size?. if it isn't things are gonna get really hairy for me.
