Doubt it's known how many produced - to my knowledge they're not super rare or anything.
Turns out that there was a sizable UN peacekeeping force in the Congo at that time:

I wonder about the purpose of the purchase of such an expensive item in that area of the world.

That is correct. Many Swedes have been deployed abroad on UN peace keeping mission. Congo included. Their salary was rax free and luxury items were duty-free. So it was common that they bought themselves an expensive watch before going home
Nearly all officers in the Danish Army I know have brought back a watch of some kind from their tour of duty, so in forty years time the market will be awash with banged-up Omegas with some sort of Army background story to jump up the price, when all that watch ever witnessed was staff work by day and evenings in the camp, drinking slush-ice and eating cake 😁
In the Danish army, the Seamaster 300 Professional is known as "The Officer's Watch" as so many bought one while abroad...
Amazing piece. That 8 is too cool.
Damn, I thought I had the official danish army officer’s watch? It’s got great provenance 😜
