Anyone ever received a bonus rock with their watch parcel?…

Have we verified it’s a rock or is it a dirty piece of broken concrete? Maybe someone is trying to smuggle a building out of the country.

Or maybe someone is trying to relocate a dry-stack wall, one piece at a time.

Not a rock but once I bought an Eterna Kontiki chronometer on EBay and in place of the watch I received a selection of watch manuals. Neither EBay nor Paypal were at all supportive and I lost out to the full value of the watch. From that day onwards I have video'd the opening of every online purchase be it a watch, a camera or a lens.

If I think back maybe 35 years I received a mail order catalogue from a bonsai nursery and was startled to also find in the envelope a lightly used sanitary towel. To increase the oddness of that was the fact that I was a regular in person visitor at their nursery!

Strange...

But anyway it reminded me of a thread I saw on either WUS or TZ many years ago, about a guy buying a watch from another member and getting the watch plus a surprise in the box - cat shit. An argument ensued on the forum and the seller claimed he didn't know it was in there, but I'm not sure too many people believed him...
I literally laughed out loud when I read this.

I heard rumor of a guy who built a Caddy that way! A man named John Cash if I recall correctly.

I was in the US Navy 50+ years ago. My squadron was returning home from an extended deployment to Keflavik, Iceland.

I put this 5 lb Icelandic volcanic rock in the bottom of my seabag with my uniforms on top of it.

Going through customs at NAS Jacksonville the customs agent lifted up my seabag and thought that it was unusually heavy for just uniforms . He bounced it on the floor and it made a loud clunking sound.

Naturally I had to unpack my seabag for him to inspect. He had a good laugh when he got to the bottom. He said that he had never seen anybody try to smuggle in a volcanic rock.

Exiting the country of origin with sand / rocks is a bigger issue nowadays, risking getting fines or worse.

If we’re talking rocks, I got rocks. Here’s one my kids brought back from the beach. It must have spent time in a tide pool with grains of sand on top slowly carving the pits. The bottom is smooth.

So I was waiting on a delivery from my German post forwarding box of a Tissot that I’d bought out of Italy. Had issues with UPS holding it and wanting more fees and it seemed to take a while through Customs too.
It arrived today and felt heavier than expected. Opened it up to find a wrapped rock

First thoughts were I had been scammed. 🤨 our receptionist was next to me as she loves seeing all the unboxing of the random vintage crap I buy and she is also a watch girl. She was baffled too. Was about to start furiously messaging the seller but then in the bottom corner of the box I found my watch tucked away! 😅 Has anyone ever encountered this before?

It may be fossilized worm holes. Pre historic worms burrowing in the mud sediments, typical of the ordovician red mudstone. Please take this info with a grain of rocksalt.

True or not, my kids will love that theory.

A friend of mine bought a hard drive from Best Buy. The box contained a rock and two potatoes and no hard drive.

Locals tend to call it the 'Snoopy museum.'

I used to stop by there on a regular basis when I had work and Family in Santa Rosa. Love the upstairs play room, where one can draw or make animated Zoetrope strips. Often though that is full of a class of kids on a field trip, which only adds to the energy of the place.

The ice rink is also interesting. One of his studios was up above it with a long spiral ramp that he could walk up without taking his skates off. In case he got an idea while skating. The museum was constructed in the ice rink parking lot. Easy freeway access, across the street from the regional mall complex.
